Letter from Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) Director to Employees - Masks will be Provided

[Editor's note: KMB is a bus operator in Hong Kong]

"To All KMB and Long Win Bus Frontline Colleagues,

The epidemic now facing Hong Kong is severe. The daily patronage of KMB and Long Win buses has recorded a very significant decline. In order to ensure that the company’s development can be sustained and to strive to protect the health of frontline employees, at this stage we need to review the changes in patronage in various routes and will adjust the bus timetables accordingly. By doing so, we are ensuring a healthy and solid foundation for growth in view of this extremely difficult operating environment. The temporary work rosters effective from February will also allow our colleagues more rest time for their health and wellbeing.

In addition, owing to the severe supply shortage of face masks, the company has been sourcing through various channels, including direct contact with suppliers, distributors and the government. Nonetheless, the number of face masks the company currently has in stock is very limited. From this Sunday (2 February 2020) onwards, the number of masks provided to all frontline employees will be changed to one mask per roster per employee. This ensures proper protection for each one. The company will continue to source more masks. Once supply situation returns to normal, the company promises to resume the distribution of two masks per roster per frontline employee.
Once again, I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone for your continual steadfast work during this difficult time.

I wish you all peace of mind and safety at work and at home!

Patrick Pang Shu-hung
KMB Deputy Operations Director

Organizations Provide Spaces for HongKongers to Eat

On the second day (July 30) of the full day ban on dining in restaurants, shops and organizations have spontaneously provided spaces for the public to eat.

The coffee shop "Yu Leisure" in Yuen Long announced on social media on 29 July that they would be open to the public for dining. Sean, the person in-charge, said that many people were forced to eat takeaways on the street, despite the wet weather. As a Christian, Sean said that it is their duty to "do what is just and help the weak". Hence, he chose to open the restaurant for public use.

When asked if he would be worried about violations, Sean emphasized that in the past year, Hongkongers have been uniting to oppose "draconian laws", and the current epidemic prevention ordinance, which ignores the needs of the grassroots, is a perfect example of a "draconian law" that needs opposition from the people.

"We mustn't listen to the government's words and do what they tell us to do."

However, he also pointed out that customers will be reminded not to eat the takeaways purchased at his store, otherwise they will be treated as dine-in customers, and epidemic prevention work will be done as usual, such as the taking of body temperature for those who come in, and maintaining a social distance of 1.5 metres from each other.

KMB also announced on July 29 that it will open it's covered bus terminals in Tuen Mun, Tai Wai and Jordan for people to eat. There are about 20 chairs at the bus terminus of Tuen Mun Station, each spaced 1.5 meters apart, with garbage bags and disinfection supplies. Several "Friends of KMB" volunteers came forward to disinfect and clean the area after the public had eaten.

Oscar, the director of the KMB's bus service, said that after the company saw yesterday's ban on, many people had no place to eat, so they "did their part" to help HongKongers. He revealed that there were about 20 people using the facilities today, and many office workers bought their food from nearby shopping malls to eat at the terminus.

"Its more hygienic this way".

Police Finds Fault with Bus Drivers and Bus Companies

In addition to the arrest of a New World Bus driver, Hong Kong police also accused the staff from Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) of violating the gathering ban.

The crew from Kowloon Motor Bus was sent by their company to monitor the traffic conditions on Nathan Road due to the police operation and massive number of road blocks set on a Sunday.

Police demanded the staff from Kowloon Motor Bus to leave Nathan Road as they have "breached the law".
