Malaysia stands with Hong Kong despite China's Crackdown

The Communist Party of China (CPC) determined to globally crack down on Hong Kong's extensive anti-extradition bill movement. China tried to percent Hong Kong's overseas supporters by all means. Some Malaysian Chinese initiated to counteract the anti-extradition bill movement. Endless verbal violence on the internet occured. Peace rallies in support of Hong Kong people are suppressed. The Malaysian Chinese Civil Society (the host of the assembly) seemed to "kneel-down" to the Malaysian government. Malaysian student activism leader Liu Yeung-hung and veteran current affairs commentator So Ming-keung were being doxxed, boycotted and smeared.

Malaysians and Koreans Ask of Their Governments to Restrict Access of Chinese into their Countries

The Wuhan coronavirus has been spreading all over the globe over the past few weeks. With the increasing number of confirmed cases, Malaysians and Koreans in their respective countries, raised petitions, asking for their government to prohibit Chinese travellers from entering their countries. Over a million people have responded to the petition.

Taiwan's Centre for Disease Control announced that Chinese visitors from Hubei Province, China were prohibited to enter Taiwan; Taiwanese returning from mainland China were required to conduct self-health management for 14 days; issuance of visiting permits has also suspended for Chinese who have right of adobe in overseas countries, HKSAR or Macau.

There are 4 confirmed cases in Korea at the moment. Koreans started a petition on the Blue House's website, which has gained a total number of about 470,000 signatures, asking for their country to follow what North Korea did: closing their borders since the start of the outbreak. However, the Korean government has not responded to any of these petitions and requests yet.

The similar situation was also found in Malaysia, whereby 3 infected cases were actually travellers from Wuhan, China. 380,000 signed on "change.org", in a bid to ask of the Malaysian government to prohibit all entries of Chinese citizens into Malaysia.

Namewee, Malaysian singer tells us why the name "Wuhan virus" should be used

Namewee, a popular singer in South East Asia, said in a video that many diseases are named after the place where the outbreak occurred. For example, Ebola is the name of a river in Africa. Other famous examples are Hong Kong feet, German measles, and Japanese encephalitis. This way of naming has been a tradition in the medical world. The purpose is to allow us to commemorate the place where the plague broke out, to reflect, and to draw lessons from history. There is no discrimination at all.

Namewee also emphasized that he respects the Chinese government's calling Wuhan virus as Coronavirus, and people who go to China have to abide by Chinese regulations, the same as one must abide by any other countries' regulations when he is there.

Having said that, Namewee argued that given Malaysia is not ruled by the Beijing government, why should they do things according to what Chinese government stipulates?

1Malaysia Development Berhad Fraud Case – Malaysian Police Insists Low Taek Jho Hiding in Macau

The Inspector-General of Police of the Royal Malaysia Police (#PDRM) Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador recently stated that the mastermind behind the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (#1MDB) fraud case and wealthy Chinese businessman Low Taek Jho was hiding in Macau.

PDRM accused Chinese law enforcement agencies of providing asylum to him and causing many obstructions in the extradition process. The Chinese Embassy in Malaysia and the Macau Government subsequently denied the claims. The Office of the Secretary for Security of Macau issued a statement saying that PDRM unilaterally claimed that Low was in Macau and that it was inconsistent with the facts.

Abdul Hamid pointed out that "the Macau police should take this matter seriously"

According to foreign news reports on Aug 7, Abdul Hamid reiterated that Low was hiding in Macau. Speaking about requesting the foreign police to arrest a criminal, he asked, "Did we do anything wrong? If they asked for our cooperation, we would also assist." He believed that it should be in the “nature” of police to bring criminals to justice. He emphasized that this is a crime involving RM50 billion, not a political feud.

Abdul Hami pointed out, "Low has developed business in Macau with almost no constraints. His family is there. Is it really that difficult to investigate into their whereabouts?" He said that since PDRM has submitted an Interpol red alert calling for police everywhere to assist in tracing Low’s whereabouts, “Macau police should take this matter seriously and uphold a spirit of mutual assistance, instead of shirking responsibilities."

Malaysia Refuses to Extradite Uyghurs to China. Scholar Says Malaysia’s Move Might Anger Beijing

Reuters reported that the Malaysian government declared its stance in September this year to firmly refuse extraditing Uyghur refugees to China. South China Morning Post reported on November 15 that the move could drive Uyghurs to seek refuge in Southeast Asian Muslim countries. The report also said that this move represented Malaysia’s declaration of Uyghurs’ status for the first time, and contrasted its neighbouring country Indonesia. A professor from George Washington University has said, “This is likely to anger Beijing, but it is a responsible move.”

The report said that the government of Malaysia, a country with the majority of its population being Muslims, mentioned in a response to the Parliament in September that even if requests were to come directly from Beijing, they would not repatriate Uyghurs who have sought refuge in Malaysia. This move represented Malaysia’s declaration of Uyghur’s status for the first time, and contrasted its neighbouring country Indonesia. Last month, Indonesia repatriated three Uyghurs back to China.

Cancelled $10.5bn Malaysia port project plays down China role

The Melaka Gateway project is a $10.5 billion project of a vast artificial island off the coast of Malaysia. In late November authorities cancelled land reclamation of this project awarded to KAJ Development after four years of “no development”.

The massive project was awarded to KAJ, a Malaysian-registered and -owned developer, in 2016 during the administration of former Prime Minister Najib Razak. The following year, the company roped in Chinese companies PowerChina International Group which is an entity of China’s state-owned, Shenzhen Yantian Port Group and Rizhao Port Group to develop the project jointly.

A high-ranking state government official told Nikkei Asia that KAJ’s failure to acknowledge the extent of Chinese involvement in the development led to it being labelled a “China project” among state authorities.

China outspends US in ASEAN investment blitz

China plans to open a big solar panel module plant in Malaysia and build a 580 km highway in Laos, part of a charm offensive as the U.S. steps up efforts to counter Beijing's influence in Southeast Asia.

The plant will be built by Chinese solar power giant Risen Energy, which has agreed to invest 42.2 billion ringgit ($10.1 billion) in the photovoltaic industry in Malaysia, the nation's Ministry of International Trade and Industry announced June 24.

The day before, China held an online meeting with cabinet ministers of partner countries in its Belt and Road infrastructure initiative. Beijing offered COVID-19 vaccines and cooperation as these nations struggle to shift to low-carbon economies. Risen Energy's investment decision likely reflected the wishes of Beijing policymakers.

Chinese rocket falls to Earth, NASA says Beijing did not share information

//A Chinese rocket fell back to Earth on Saturday [July 31, 2022] over the Indian Ocean but Nasa said Beijing had not shared the "specific trajectory information" needed to know where possible debris might fall.

US Space Command saidthe Long March 5B rocket re-entered over the Indian Ocean at approximately 12.45pm EDT Saturday (1645 GMT, July 31, 2022), but referred questions about "reentry’s technical aspects such as potential debris dispersal impact location" to China.

"All spacefaring nations should follow established best practices and do their part to share this type of information in advance to allow reliable predictions of potential debris impact risk," NASA administrator Bill Nelson said. "Doing so is critical to the responsible use of space and to ensure the safety of people here on Earth."//
