Protest Against Construction of Crematorium in Southern China

(29 Nov) In Huazhou City, Guangdong Province, members of the public complained to the media yesterday (28 Nov), criticising the government for failing to take residents’ health into account by insisting on constructing a new funeral parlour and crematorium at Wenlou Town.

The government attempted to resume the land from local people in the name of building a cultural and ecological park
. It announced the project on one of its websites from 15 to 25 November for ten days. Not until 24 November, people were told that a crematorium would be built. When the news broke, many locals opposed strongly. But in order to prevent them from protesting together, the government sent a thousand police and security officers to the site, and threatened “If any person dares to comment on this subject, he/she will be caught at once”.

But people resisted. They even planned to march to the government building to secure their rights. The government decided to send riot police to Wenlou Town, who then blocked all major roads and prohibited any person or vehicle to pass. A resident said that a 3km long stream of police carriers was formed, which further intensified the conflict. Another resident said that a police car was turned upside down, “The police have fired, and it worsens the situation quickly”.

It is clear from a video footage that tear gas was fired, and riot police beat people harshly and dragged them on the ground. Many were injured and hospitalised as a result. The locals accused the government of deception, “The project is so large that it will certainly affect all people in the surroundings, but it was announced only on one government website. Most people are kept in the dark”. Police officers have combined a carrot-and-stick approach with capturing and interrogating to force the locals to submit. As early as in 2014, at Ligang Town within Huazhou City, the construction of a funeral parlour sparked huge public opposition, which led the government to suspend the project eventually.

Guangdong Government Withdraws the Plan to Build Crematoria after Violent Confrontations

Previous report: https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/12492

(30 Nov) The protest went violent and the police deployed water cannon vehicle, fired teargas, and beaten citizens with batons. Multiple injuries were reported.

The Huazhou Government announced in the statement that due to different opinions towards the new "ecological park", the local government decided to further consult public opinions and suspend the construction.

It also added that any activities jeopardising public safety and security will be punished severely according to the law.

But the statement did not contain an official document serial number. People in Huazhou are still highly alert of the government’s next action.

Guangzhou Metro construction site collapsed, 3 persons are still missing

(There was no further update on the 3 missing persons as of 8-Dec morning. )

[SUMMARY]
Guangzhou Metro construction site collapsed again! Last time it was Line 2; this time it was the turn of Line 11. Netizens questioned whether that was actually a human-made disaster which could have been avoided if the ground beneath Canton wasn't emptied. Two cars and three people fell into a 10-metre-wide sinkhole on site. The rescue was being halted at that moment. But it resumed later. Residents could not get back to their homes yet after hours.

[Tofu-dreg Project] Guangzhou Metro sinkhole: 2 cars, 3 persons fallen

A sinkhole popped up at the Guangzhou Metro construction site at 9:28 am today (1 December 2019). A sanitation vehicle and a motorcycle were trapped. According to first aiders on site, three people were trapped and being rescued. Casualty figures are to be confirmed. Guangzhou Municipal Emergency Management Bureau said that construction works of the subway might have caused the incident. According to the source, no flammable gas leak was detected on site.

From what we understood, the incident took place at the construction area of the Line 11 Shahe Station. Announcement on the official Weibo of Guangzhou Metro said the road surface collapsed at the junction of Guangzhou Dadao and Yudongxi Lu. A sanitation vehicle and a motorcycle fell into a giant hole. At that moment, traffic was restricted on the road segment. Municipal Emergency, Tianhe District, Municipal Traffic, and Traffic police, firefighters, and the Metro company were organising cooperating for the rescue.

First aiders had received a call at 9:35 am and arrived at the scene fifteen minutes later. They were still standing by. A first aider said, 'We understand that an electric car, a sprinkler vehicle, and three people are still inside the hole.' That person also said that, since the hole was large and still collapsing, they still needed to wait for firefighters and armed police before they could start the rescue. All rescue equipment was already secured. To prevent the area of the collapse to enlarge further, Guangzhou Metro was partially refilling the sinkhole.

After 4 pm, sources reported that the rescue operation had stopped for the time being. Another source confirmed that rescue operation ended, but did not say whether any people were rescued.

A resident living at about 400m away from the incident said he witnessed the entire road collapse of the incident. First, a hole rapidly developed around where the road surface collapsed. A person riding on a motorcycle drove by. 'When the road surface first collapsed, he didn't fall in. As he tried to leave, the second collapse began. The area of the sinkhole enlarged, and then he fell in.' Witness indicated at least three more collapses after that.

The giant hole occupied at least three car lanes, with a diameter of over 10 metres. Junction under the bridge was already sealed off. On the east end of the bridge, four concrete mixers were at the spot where the sinkhole being filled through suspension arms. Every 20 minutes, the next concrete mixer was connected with the suspension arm and continued the operation. On the west end of the bridge, the soil was piled up to 1.4 metres high. Two excavators were loading debris onto the dump trucks.

Area of 1 km around the incident site has been sealed. A resident said, since he lived inside the seal-off area, Tianhe Emergency Team members intercepted and stopped them from entering their buildings, claiming 'it may be dangerous inside cordon'. At the same time they tried to calm down the boiling emotion of people on site.

[What the netizens said]

No more hand-grab machine or I'll chop my hands off: Boast about fundamental constructions. Where it should be secured is still the same old.

Tiny Wish abc: This is not a natural disaster. Obviously man-made catastrophe!

Miss PUCCA: This should be the second road collapse caused by the subway. I still remember what happened to Line 2.

Buddist-like stock robber: Ground beneath Guangzhou has been emptied

Daring Chief Editor in #CitizenNews Welcomes Journalists who Left #CableNews on #MassResignation: “We Have Nothing to Lose”

On December 1, 2020, Cable News in Hong Kong announced a major layoff plan after a series of personnel change in the management. The move has triggered a resignation en masse in the station’s newsroom, including 11 journalists and editors of the #ChinaNews team, as a sign of protest.

On January 18, 2021, the 11 of them announced joining of an online news platform, #CitizenNews, and continue their work on China News.

Former Assignment Editor of Cable News, Wong Lai-ping, expressed that it was a spontaneous action in last December when they resigned together in response to the station’s arbitrary layoff plan.

“We have never thought about coming together again. We even doubted whether we should continue working in the media industry.” However, many encouraged them to carry on their journalistic profession and continue to work as a team.

“So we talked among ourselves and agreed to work together with a focus on China News as we always do.”

The Chief Editor of Citizen News, Li Yue-wah said that the collaboration is “unplanned” and the consensus was reached after discussions following the mass resignation in last December.

She stressed that “This is worth trying as we have nothing to lose.” She called it an act “to smash the cooking pots and sink the boats.”

Li also revealed that since its launch 4 years ago, Citizen News has yet to balance its book. They initially set a target at 4,000 subscribers, for each paying a monthly fee of HK$100. “We are still falling short of this target,” Li sighed.

Adding 11 members of the former China News team from Cable News will double the current workforce of Citizen News. In addition, the news platform is planning to move to a bigger office with live-broadcast facilities. “This is going to double our expenses.” Li added.

She further explained that the platform is not going to pend on crowdfunding, which impact is believed to be short-lived. Instead, it is keen on expanding its subscription base to facilitate long-term development.
