Kwok Wing-hang not reappointed as Competition Commission member

Pro-democracy lawmaker Dennis Kwok Wing-hang of Civic Party was not reappointed as Competition Commission member after his two-year term.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam stressed that the appointment is based on merit. When asked if it was a score-settling, Kwok said that he hoped that these independent departments would not be politicised.

Kwok was recently under attacked by Beijing openly. Many believed that Beijing, by criticizing Kwok, has intervened Hong Kong affairs, which is against the Basic Law and the One Country Two Systems police.

China Film Companies Ban Casting 'Non-patriotic' Actors and Actresses

Apple Daily reported that China film companies would ban Hong Kong and Taiwan actors who did not declare they "love China". Actors and actresses have to issue a statement and ensure they would not be banned by China for having an "incorrect political stance" for as long as 10 years.

The case had its second hearing in the Kowloon City Magistrates' Court on Apr 29, during which the prosecutors exchanged the "assaulting police" charge for "ordinary assault". The magistrate adjourned the case until June 10 at the request of the defendant to discuss with the Department of Justice. The defendant was released on bail under the original conditions. In addition, the prosecution applied for anonymity for the police officer to "ensure that police officer and their families will be protected from harassment". The anonymity order was approved today without opposition from the defendant.

Next Magazine issues statement condemning Hong Kong Police for arresting reporters and suppressing press freedom

At around 4:30pm on April 28, 2 Next Magazine reporters were arrested for no reason after an interview. Next Magazine issued an statement swiftly afterwards.

It stated that at 4:30pm in Clear Water Bay, 2 reporters were investigating on the case of Assistant Commissioner of Police Rupert Dover when they were arrested in a public area without any reason and held custody in Tseung Kwan O Police Station. Although the reporters proved their identities, one of them was handcuffed. Next Magazine solemnly condemned the Hong Kong Police Force for abusing their power and threatening reporters, aiming to hinder the reporters from revealing scandals of senior police officers.

It was also stressed that fear and the determination to reveal the truth were precisely the mission of Next Magazine.

Court Dismisses Charges on Man who Bought Balloons for His Kids on Protest Day

On 1 January 2020, "New Year's Day Protest" organized by Hong Kong's,democracy front had devolved into a conflict between the police and the protestors. A 39-year-old electrician was accused of possessing zip-ties and balloons outside the MTR Causeway Bay station that day, and was charged with one count of possession of offensive weapons or tools suitable for illegal use.

When the case was heard again in the Eastern Magistrates' Court on April 29, 2020, the prosecutors applied to dismiss the charge on the grounds of insufficient evidence, and the electrician was acquitted in court. The defendant applied to avoid the hearing costs and reiterated that the items involved in the case were reasonable, and that he indicated his job as an electrician to the police, and the balloons involved were gifts for his children.

The pro-demorcracy camp were dissatisfied with the government's rejection to publish the construction plan.

Chan Pai-Ming Jimmy, Director of Highways, said "There should be some considerations of security while having official events and International meetings."

Pro-democracy lawmaker Chan Chi-Chuen Raymond responded, "You provided the building plans of Hong Kong Police headquarters when you applied for the funding proposal in relation to its construction, right?"

Another pro-democracy lawnaker Wu Chi-Wai added, "This is club house for the police, it should not contains any security concerns like Police stations and buildings of the HKPF. That means that you are not carrying out normal operations since you received those documents provided by the HKPF. In other words, you are an idiot!"

Chan Fan Frank, Secretary for Transport and Housing, replied "I wish that Mr Wu Chi Wai could take back his words just now."

A number of council members doubted the reason why the cost of renovation of the POC increased from 300 million to 600 million, which includes the construction of unnecessary facilities, pro-democracy Cheng Chung Tai said "these 4 swimsuit dryers are going to cost us 60 thousand dollars."

Tam Man-Ho Jeremy, a pro-democracy lawmaker of the Civic Party then proposed an adjournment of the discussion which has yet to be resumed.
