China's virus response likely cost world two months: White House

Reuters, March 11, 2020

//China did not initially handle the coronavirus outbreak well, likely costing the world two months when it could have prepared and dramatically limited the outbreak, Robert O’Brien, the White House national security adviser, said on Wednesday.
“Unfortunately, rather than using best practices, this outbreak in Wuhan was covered up,” he said during a think-tank appearance, citing reports from Chinese citizens about doctors being silenced or put into isolation “so that the word of this virus could not get out.”
“It probably cost the world community two months to respond,” during which “we could have dramatically curtailed what happened both in China and what’s now happening across the world,” he said.//

China's Propaganda: Fighting Deadly Viruses with Marxism and Maoism

â€śMarxism is a force that supports the absolute victory in battling against the COVID-19 and it is an important embodiment that shows the superiority of the socialism with Chinese characteristics,” wrote in article entitled “Marxist Belief: An Internal Force to Defeat the Novel Coronavirus Epidemic" published by an 'academic' journal in China.

Even though the epidemic is far from being over, the CCP’s Publicity Department already published “A Battle Against Epidemic: China Combating COVID-19 in 2020,” a book praising Xi Jinping.

During the Cultural Revolution, Mao Zedong Thought, or Maoism, was promoted as “a spiritual atom bomb of infinite power,” which could practically resolve any difficulty. All of a sudden, “extraordinary” results were achieved if guided by Maoism at work, slaughtering pigs, or treating diseases.

China Blasts Nobel Laureate for saying the coronavirus originated there

//The Chinese embassy in Lima published an announcement blasting the Nobel laureate for his “irresponsible” comments he made with regards to China and the coronavirus outbreak.

The statement, which can be found on the embassy’s account on chat app WeChat, was in reference to a column written by Vargas Llosa and published in Spanish newspaper El PaĂs.

In the column, 83-year-old Vargas Llosa stated that the virus had “originated in China,” and that because of the epidemic, society is showing signs of returning to the Middle Ages when people lived in fear of the plague.

This would not be happening were it not for China’s undemocratic political system, highlighting the fact that doctors who tried to blow the whistle at the start of the outbreak were silenced, and time that could have been used to develop a vaccine was thereby lost. He said such actions were the hallmark of dictatorships.//

Hong Kong Experts: Wuhan Coronavirus originated from China is an "outcome of Chinese bad habits"

- Using "Wuhan coronavirus" or "Wuhan pneumonia" in daily communication and media coverage is for the sake of easy understanding

- China has forgotten the hard lesson of SARS epidemic by allowing fresh game meat to become food delicacy in modern cities

- Wuhan's South China seafood wholesale market was the origin of the coronavirus.

- Wuhan pneumonia is an "outcome of Chinese bad habits" which include the "indiscriminate hunt of wild animals, inhuman treatment of animals, and lack of respect for life".

- Should such culture remain, SARS 3.0 would certainly break out.

- World Health Organization was too slow in its decision to declare a pandemic of COVID-19", making many countries unprepared for the outbreak.

- Claims of the origin of the coronavirus in the United States are "unsubstantiated" and "self deceiving".

Hong Kong Experts: Wuhan Coronavirus originated from China is an "outcome of Chinese bad habits";
Many Countries Unprepared Due to WHO's Slow Response

The naming of the novel coronavirus has stirred up disputes, as China opposed the insertion of "Wuhan" despite that it is the origin of the virus.

Professor Yuen Kwok-yung, a SARS expert and microbiologist at the University of Hong Kong, and honorary assistant professor, Lung chun-bong contributed an article to Ming Pao on March 18. They wrote that using Wuhan coronavirus or Wuhan pneumonia in daily communication and media coverage is for the sake of mass communication. The name is easier for the public to understand, compared to the formal term adopted in scientific debates or academic discussions.

Yuen and Lung expressed that during the 2013 SARS outbreak, coronavirus was found in civet cat, leading to an outright ban of game meat trading in China; however, 17 years later, the game meat market is flourishing in China. In other words, China seemed to have forgotten the hard lesson of SARS epidemic. Yuen and Lung criticized the behavior allowing fresh game meat to become food delicacy in modern cities as eye-popping.

The article pointed out directly that the South China seafood wholesale market in Wuhan was the origin of the coronavirus. The virus was spread through cross-infection and mutated from its natural host to an intermediate host and to human being, eventually causing human-to-human infection.

The Wuhan Coronavirus was described in the article as an "outcome of Chinese bad habits" which include the "indiscriminate hunt of wild animals, inhuman treatment of animals, and lack of respect for life". The article concluded that should such culture remain, SARS 3.0 would certainly breakout in some ten years later.

In response to China's statement that the virus was originated in the United States, the article criticized such statement as "unsubstantiated", "self-deceiving" and should be stopped to avoid making fool of themselves.

The article also criticized "the World Health Organization for being slow in its decision to declare a pandemic of COVID-19". As a result, many countries are left insufficiently prepared in anti-epidemic measures vulnerable for the disease. For the time being only Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are better guarded for virus attack.

[Editor's note: In the evening of March 18, Mingpao said Yuen and Lung withdrew their article from the newspaper and that Yuen said that scientists should not get involved with politics. See Stand News Report.]

Quarantine Facility Doctor in China: Beijing's Statistics Cannot be Trusted

//China's health authorities on Mar 19 reported no new cases of coronavirus infection in Wuhan... but a local doctor who works at a quarantine facility told Kyodo News that the government tally "cannot be trusted."

The number of novel coronavirus patients in Wuhan, the epicenter of China's virus outbreak, was manipulated in time for President Xi Jinping's visit last week, the doctor said.

A number of symptomatic patients were abruptly released from quarantine early while a portion of testing was suspended.

The number of patients currently undergoing treatment is deliberately being reduced in an effort to show the Xi government's success in combatting the epidemic, he said.

According to the National Health Commission, nearly 58,000 people have been discharged from hospitals in Hubei Province, where Wuhan is the capital.//

Wuhan Citizens: "Whether the official figure is accurate or not ... This is a political treatment, not medical treatment"

People in Wuhan told RTHK the reality is far from having none local infection of coronavirus in China.

Wuhan authorities have already closed the 10 or so temporary hospitals where tests were conducted on people showing mild symptoms.

A Wuhan resident said that his 70-year-old mother suffered from pneumonia once again after she was discharged from hospital and is now in isolation at a hotel. No hospitals were prepared to admit her.

Aother person said his mother, who is in hospital with a heart problem, had seen coronavirus patients being turned away by staff, without testing to back the official data of confirmed cases.

A man whose mother died of Covid-19 criticised the government for failing to warn people about the epidemic and for even claiming there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission up until mid January.

China is Changing the History of Wuhan Pneumonia Outbreak

The Chinese Communist Party has begun “revising” the history of the Wuhan pneumonia outbreak. Recently, the English homepage of the state-run Global Times secretly changed the original wording “Wuhan pneumonia” to “unknown pneumonia related to Coronavirus” on a news article dated January 18, 2020.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government has been disseminating news referring the United States to the origin of the Wuhan Pneumonia.

//Since August 2019, ProPublica has tracked more than 10,000 suspected fake Twitter accounts involved in a coordinated influence campaign with ties to the Chinese government. Among those are the hacked accounts of users from around the world that now post propaganda and disinformation about the coronavirus outbreak, the Hong Kong protests and other topics of state interest.

Those accounts’ content and behavior closely mirrored the tactics of the Chinese government influence campaigns publicly unmasked by Twitter in August and September 2019.

We found a pattern of coordinated activity among the fake accounts that appeared to be aimed at building momentum for particular storylines. ProPublica uncovered additional evidence that these accounts operated as part of a Chinese government influence campaign.//

U.S. Secretary of State: China Still Withholding Coronavirus Information

[Editor's note: The image shows patients sharing ventilators in a hospital in New York]

In an interview with a radio program on March 24, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo repeated previous charges that Beijing's delay in sharing information about the virus had created risks to people worldwide and said this had "truly put thousands of lives at risk."

"My concern is that this cover-up, this disinformation that the Chinese Communist Party is engaged in, is still denying the world the information it needs so that we can prevent further cases or something like this from recurring again," he added.

"This is an ongoing global crisis, and we need to make sure that every country today is being transparent, sharing what's really going on, so that the global community, the global health care, infectious disease community can begin to work on this in a holistic way."

This year on April 1, veteran actor and Cantonese opera artist Law Ka-ying posted a photo he took with Leslie Cheung on his WeChat page.

Law was, however, attacked by many Chinese netizens who criticized Lo for not paying respect to "people's army, firefighters, doctors, police and the frontline workers" in times of coronavirus outbreak.

Law left a new message in the afternoon: "It's better not to post anything on WeChat"

From Ebola Virus to "CCP Virus"

In reality as well as theory one should be politically correct. Expressions such as "people of color" might propagate stereotypes, just as racial bias still linger in judiciary in multicultural states (Bielen et al. 2019).

Certainly, one can reword "Wuhan Pneumonia" to avoid China's stark accusation of 'racism' in the terminology; however, this would be serving the 'political correctness' set by the Communist Part of China, for that Chinese government has been changing its narrative of what it once called the "Wuhan pneumomia". In the revised narrative put forward by the Chinese Communist Party in 2020, the origin of COVID-19 is no longer Wuhan in China, the first epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, but the U.S. or perhaps Italy. Although China's state media China Daily had used the term "Wuhan pneumonia" in December 2019, Chinese government now condemns the world (in particular, the U.S.) for using the 'racist' term.

Considering "Spanish flu", "Ebola virus", "Hong Kong flu", "German measles", "Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)" and "Japanese encephalitis", these are precedent examples of naming a disease after a place or site of its first outbreak. While more and more people including U.S. president Donald Trump called COVID-19 a "CCP virus", let us not forget what Prof. Ho-Fung Hung of Johns Hopkins University reminds us that criticizing the Chinese government should not be obscured as a racism.

When people around the world are combating this coronavirus, please do not forget every loss of life that has not been counted in reality but took place in the multiverse that the Chinese government could not cover up. We cannot time travel to undo the past, but we shall always remember the truths to avoid making more mistakes in the future.

Please leave behind your lament and together we will strive for a better future and pursue happiness for the human race. Hongkongers will continue to be the whistleblower to uncover CCP's doing and China authoritarianism, the root cause of this coronavirus pandemic.

Hong Kong Government: Episode Has Violated the "One China" Principle;
RTHK Reporter: Episode Only Discusses Global Anti-pandemic Effort

Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Edward Yau Tang-wah reiterated after attending a special meeting of the Finance Committee that The Pulse, an news programme produced by the public broadcaster RTHK, violated the "One China" principle, although the violation did not stem from individual interviews or angles.

In response to Yau's ambivalent accusation, Yvonne Tong, a producer and the host of the said programme in RTHK, stated on Twitter that The Pulse had only focused on the global anti-pandemic effort during said episode. Yau's comment caused her to wonder how the episode could violate the "One China" principle, calling into question whether or not Yau have seen the episode.
