“Hong Kong people can no longer go on rallies, can no longer vote;
But at least, we can still buy pineapples.

Since the Chinese import ban on Taiwanese pineapples two weeks ago, many Yuen Long residents asked a local fruit store whether they can purchase Taiwanese pineapples. The crazy owner immediately took up the suggestion without hesitation, and had promised to order them. That order filled 10 whole pallets. The owner worried whether he had overstocked.

When I went to the store in the afternoon, this was the scene I saw: hundreds of pineapple boxes sold out in a couple of hours. Those with cars came to pick up entire boxes; those queuing in line patiently waited. Many of those in line even had to place orders when they were sold out.

We all had an unspoken understanding, that this is the only thing left we can do.

This is our silent protest.

With the money spent on a 20-dollar pineapple, we support those walking on the same path as us, and gave ourselves the courage to live on in this changed city.

The pineapple I ate tasted bittersweet, just like all the joy and sorrows we share with each other.

Thank you, citizens of Yuen Long.
Thank you, the crazy owner of Hokee Fruits (@hokee_meows).
