1st Anniversary of Hong Kong Way: Human Chain in Support of Hong Kong Continues in Japan

On 23 August 2019, Hongkongers formed a 60km- human chain connecting different districts on Hong Kong island, in Kowloon and the New Territories, to express the 5 democratic demands. The event paid tribute to the 30th anniversary of the Baltic Way that took place across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in 1989.

On 23 August 2020, commemorating the 1st anniversary of Hong Kong Way, around 50 Hongkongers and Japanese formed a human chain on the street of Tokyo. The flag of "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolutions of Our Times" was waved to support Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement. A drawing portraying a gigiantic banner "we fucking love Hong Kong" that had appeared in Hong Kong protest scene was also shown.

What Next After the Fall of the Smart Lamposts at the East Kowloon March on #24Aug2019 ?

"One of the most representative moments of the #AntiELAB Movement is the fall of the smart lamposts in the East Kowloon March which were reported to have survillance function.

A tyrannical regime never ceases to monitor its people. After the plan with the lamposts was busted, they came up with the #HealthCode.

In addition to monitoring your personal health, they track your whereabouts. Whether you are infected or not, it is up to them to send you to a quarantine camp, or bar you from accessing the public space.

If we let the health code get by today, then the China-modelled "#SocialCreditSystem" will be in place next. By then, Hong Kong will become the new #Xinjiang.

Under the totalitarian rule, one has everything but freedom and human rights."

11.11: One year after Police Shooting Pro-democracy Students in Sai Wan Ho

On Nov 11, 2019, Hong Kong citizens launched "three strikes" during the Anti-ELAB Protests. Road blockage occurred in many districts.

At 7am that day, a traffic police officer fired live rounds at two unarmed youths, who were wearing black, at close range, causing critical injuries. The incident brought to a citywide discontent toward the police brutality.

Moving on to the one-year mark of the police shooting, citizens sprayed graffiti at the scene of incident.

Phrases like "ideas are bulletproof" could be seen at the neighbouring footbridge.

The 21-year-old wounded student has been charged for obstructing or resisting a police officer, attempted robbery and escaping from legal custody.

Former legislator Ted Hui Chi-fung tried conducting private prosecution against the police officer who shot the student with live round. However, the Department of Justice intervened and ordered to withdraw the prosecution.

Joint Students' Unions of Chinese University of Hong Kong issue open statement calling on HongKongers to stand in solidarity and fight on

In remembrance of a year since police's brutal attack of pro-democracy protesters at Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK), seven students' unions issued a joint statement recounting the siege on 11 November 2019 which turned the campus into chaotic battlefield: “Police fired at least 1,600 canisters of tear gas, 1,300 rubber bullets, 400 beanbag rounds and 100 sponge-tipped bullets.”

In the joint statement, the students' unions expressed that “the aftermath of the battle was grim: 10 civilians were convicted of rioting. The university bore witness to countless injuries, not to mention the unexpected attack of its president Rocky Tuan by tear gas cannisters fired from the police.”

Although the students' unions viewed the future of Hong Kong as “dark and plagued with despair”, they called on Hongkongers to stand in solidarity and “inherit the truth.”

In defiance, the unions cited the a line from Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai's film "The Grandmaster": “Hold a breath, and light a lamp”, a single spark can start a prairie fire.

"We Love the Young People of Hong Kong Even More"

On the evening of November 12, 2019, thousands of Hongkongers and alumni of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) rushed to protect the campus, as the police tried to siege the university with force.

As the police sealed off the roads, the closest one can get was Foo Tan. Some people walked from Ma On Shan while carrying bags of supply. Those who could not reach the campus cried helplessly before the live broadcast.

We love CUHK.
We love Hong Kong.
We love the young people of Hong Kong even more.

[Editor's note: The photo captured the civilian-police stand off on Bridge No. 2 on campus during the Battle of CUHK. Civilians were defending the university from the police's firing of thousands of tear gas grenades, rubber bullets and beanbag rounds with umbrellas.]
