Joint Students' Unions of Chinese University of Hong Kong issue open statement calling on HongKongers to stand in solidarity and fight on

In remembrance of a year since police's brutal attack of pro-democracy protesters at Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK), seven students' unions issued a joint statement recounting the siege on 11 November 2019 which turned the campus into chaotic battlefield: “Police fired at least 1,600 canisters of tear gas, 1,300 rubber bullets, 400 beanbag rounds and 100 sponge-tipped bullets.”

In the joint statement, the students' unions expressed that “the aftermath of the battle was grim: 10 civilians were convicted of rioting. The university bore witness to countless injuries, not to mention the unexpected attack of its president Rocky Tuan by tear gas cannisters fired from the police.”

Although the students' unions viewed the future of Hong Kong as “dark and plagued with despair”, they called on Hongkongers to stand in solidarity and “inherit the truth.”

In defiance, the unions cited the a line from Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai's film "The Grandmaster": “Hold a breath, and light a lamp”, a single spark can start a prairie fire.
