Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist: as a Hong Konger, there is no way to be happy
(09 May) A one-way plane ticket led Reuters' photographer, Tyrone Siu, back to Hong Kong at the end of May last year. He was originally stationed in Taiwan and planned to be in Hong Kong only to report on the annual candlelight vigil of the June 4th Tiananmen Square massacre. Instead, he stayed for almost a year and witnessed Hong Kong’s most chaotic days. He and the team at Reuters even won the Pulitzer Prize in the Breaking News Photography Award this year for their series on Hong Kong anti-extradition bill movement. He described his feeling of winning the prize as very complex. "As a journalist, it is a great honor to win the Pulitzer Prize. It may be what a lot of media workers aspire to achieve. But as a Hong Konger, being in the story, and knowing that many people have been injured in it, I can't say that I am happy about a movement that hurts us all.”

Hong Kong Photographer Won Accolade in Prestigious Photography Prize
Tam Ming Keung, a photographer of United Social Press, won the silver prize in the General News category of the 2020 Franch Photography Prize PX3.
The award-wining photo captured a chaotic scene at Shatin's Newtown Plaza on July 14, 2019 when the riot police violently dispersed pro-democracy civilians.
The photographer shared his thoughts on receiving the accolade:
“It is still hard to believe that police actually clash with civilians in the shopping malls. The violent incidents that took place in shopping arcades were mostly associated with terrorist attack or gun shots.
However, in Hong Kong it is almost certain that on several days of a month, heavy police presence would be found in some shopping malls, turning these premises into military grounds, as if martial laws were imposed.
On each floor, plain-clothes police could be seen discreetly standing and scouting, while riot police troop up and down, setting up cordon with orange duct tapes and intercepting shoppers at their will.”

Tam Ming Keung, a photographer of United Social Press, won the silver prize in the General News category of the 2020 Franch Photography Prize PX3.

Prizewinning photographs from the “Taiwan Press Photographer Competition 2020” are displayed at the General Association of Chinese Culture (#GACC) from September 24, 2020 and onwards.
Almost half of 123 award-winning photographs are about the anti-ELAB movement in Hong Kong, reflecting the extraordinary connections between Taiwan and Hong Kong.
With this exhibition, the organiser hopes that visitors can experience the five senses emitted from these photos and feel the concerns they have and the values they defend:
"Time passes, but the photographs capture the moment. The message can be sent to you via photos and stay in your mind. Please don’t forget that people have paid a high cost for freedom."

Unafraid of Authorites' Oppression: The Faces of the Arrested Pro-Democracy Activists in Hong Kong
On January 6, 2021, 53 pro-democracy activists were accused of violating the #NationalSecurityLaw for participating in pro-democracy camp's primary election. Police made arrested at their homes in the early morning.
In less than two months, the police demanded them to report to the police stations ahead of the scheduled date. On Feb 28, 2021, 47 of them were charged with "conspiracy to subverting state powers".
In these #portraits taken earlier, the facial expression of these pro-democracy Hongkongers were captured in close-ups: Some eyed a sharp warning glance; some looked more determined than ever; some were really calm--none of them would surrender.
During the interview, they were more relaxed and peaceful than others. They tried to enjoy freedom to the most as if it was the last time.
