Reuters: ByteDance's Censorship on Indonesian News App Requested Removal of Unfavourable Anti-China Content

Reuters quoted six insiders saying, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, censored content that was critical of the Chinese government on a popular Indonesian news app "Baca Berita" (BaBe) from 2018 to mid-2020. Keywords including Tienanmen and President Mao were on the banned list.

Quoting various sources, the team at ByteDance's Beijing Headquarter instructed local Indonesian moderators to remove all negative articles related to the CCP on BaBe. Previously Indonesia had banned TikTok briefly for displaying "pornography, inappropriate content and profanity". As ByteDance wanted to lift the ban, they compromised with the government to employ a local TikTok team and strengthened the company's influence in Indonesia. ByteDance acquired Baca Berita shortly after.

Insiders revealed, after the acquisition, ByteDance's Beijing Headquarter created new moderation guidelines for BaBe. Contents perceived as critical of China were prohibited from publishing or they would be removed from the platform. A person directly involved said all articles containing sensitive words, such as Tienanmen and President Mao, had to be taken down. Another direct source said ByteDance also censored an article relating to the South China Sea tension from Antara, an Indonesia official news agency.

Indonesia Refuses Landing of US Military Aircrafts for Refuels, Vows to “Remain Neutral” amid Growing Sino-American Tensions

Reuters quoted four high-ranking Indonesian officials on 20 October as saying that Indonesia had refused earlier this year to let America’s P-8 patrol aircrafts land and refuel. It was claimed that Indonesia wished to “remain neutral” diplomatically as it had always been amid the increasingly fierce competition between the US and China.

The report quoted the sources as saying that US officials had repeatedly contacted Indonesia’s defence and foreign ministers at a “high level” in July and August. According to the sources, the US was seeking permission to land and refuel its P-8 maritime patrol aircrafts, responsible for monitoring China’s actions in the South China Sea. The request was denied by Indonesian president Joko Widodo.

The report said the request surprised Indonesia, which had remained neutral diplomatically and had never allowed foreign military activities in its territory as the sources noted. As US-China tensions mount in Southeast Asia, Indonesian foreign minister Retno Marsudi said in September that Indonesia did not wish to be involved in their competition.

Malaysia Refuses to Extradite Uyghurs to China. Scholar Says Malaysia’s Move Might Anger Beijing

Reuters reported that the Malaysian government declared its stance in September this year to firmly refuse extraditing Uyghur refugees to China. South China Morning Post reported on November 15 that the move could drive Uyghurs to seek refuge in Southeast Asian Muslim countries. The report also said that this move represented Malaysia’s declaration of Uyghurs’ status for the first time, and contrasted its neighbouring country Indonesia. A professor from George Washington University has said, “This is likely to anger Beijing, but it is a responsible move.”

The report said that the government of Malaysia, a country with the majority of its population being Muslims, mentioned in a response to the Parliament in September that even if requests were to come directly from Beijing, they would not repatriate Uyghurs who have sought refuge in Malaysia. This move represented Malaysia’s declaration of Uyghur’s status for the first time, and contrasted its neighbouring country Indonesia. Last month, Indonesia repatriated three Uyghurs back to China.

Indonesian Pharmaceutical Factory Changed Their Mind on the Uncertain Data after Saying 97% Validity for Chinese Vaccination

Brazil, Turkey and countries in East Asia Regions subsequently purchased Chinese COVID-19 vaccination which the foreign press claims it as “Chinese Vaccination Diplomatic”. Indonesia is the most frontline among these countries as they have received 1.2 million doses of CoronaVac, COVID-19 vaccinations from Sinovac Biotech in Beijing. However, Bio Forma Company, an Indonesia state-owned pharmaceutical company, pointed yesterday (Dec 8) that according to their interim data, the CoronaVac achieves 97% effectiveness, but then changed their wordings to uncertain protectiveness of the vaccine less than a day after.

An Indonesian state-owned pharmaceutical factory PT Bio Farma, co-operating with Beijing Sinovac Biotech, has announced on Tuesday (Dec 8) that the interim data of CoronaVoc phase 3 clinical test shows its 97% of effective protection without providing details.

Sinovac Biotech immediately issued a statement that they have not received data on the effectiveness of CoronaVac phase 3 clinical test. Later in the same day, PT Bio Farma added that the effective rate of Sinovac Biotech vaccinations has not yet been determined and claimed that the complete report will release in Jan 2021. Both parties did not explain the reason for misunderstanding.

WHO Experts Review the Severe Side Effects Data of Sinovac, Commented "Low Credibility" for Elderly

WHO experts indicated 5 May that the Chinese Sinovac for COVID-19 has protection to adults who are under 60. However, there is a lack of data on the risk of serious side effects from vaccines, with “low credibility” for patients over aged 60 and with chronic illnesses. The expert group even referred to the severe side effect data of Sinovac on the elderly and patients with chronic illness as “very low” credibility.

The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) in WHO evaluated the Phase 3 clinical test data of Sinovac in China, Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey, and Chile. They are very confident about the effectiveness of two doses of Sinovac in preventing adults aged 18-59, moderately confident about the severe side effect data on adults aged 59 years or younger. However, for those aged 60 years or older and patients with chronic diseases, the risk data of patients with severe side effects after vaccination is classified as “low credibility”, which means that the test data of Sinovac cannot determine the risks of serious side effects of Sinovac on the elderly and patients.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced on Friday that it will impose an import ban to the company's seafood, alleging that its fleet of 32 vessels was involved in forced labor, the first time the U.S. imposed such a ban on an entire fleet of vessels.
