Citizens Chanted Slogens at Lennon Bridge against Cold Weather

1320 | “Lunch with you in Central × Stick with you - Keep Fighting till our 5 Demands are All Met” was held at Central Lennon Bridge this afternoon.

Under the rainy and freezing weather, civilians chanted slogens like “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times”, “Fight for freedom, Stand with Hong Kong” and “Five demands, not one less”. They held different posters to remind passersby about all the incidents during the movement. They also emphasised young people are the future of society, while calling for citizens to participate the “World Day of Human Rights Rally” which will be organized at Victoria Park this Sunday.

A teenager suddenly stood in the middle of the crowd, and danced while the civilians were singing “Glory to Hong Kong”. He said that he was not working in Central but came here to support the event.

The Central Lennon Bridge was now decorated with posters again after being cleaned by the police.
Waiter Charged for Criminal Damage Complained of Police Assaulting Him in the Police Station

A 29-year-old waiter was charged for criminal damage of MTR facilities, including gates and tickets machines, in September. The case was mentioned in West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts today. The prosecution requested for a case to answer by the defendant, but was rejected by the defense lawyer, and pointed out that more time was needed for legal opinion. The case was approved to postpone to 6 January 2020. However, bail for the defendant was declined.

The defense lawyer complained that the police rejected to provide the defendant a list of lawyers on duty, prior to police officers filming an interview. After that, the defendant was forced to sign on respective documents. In addition, the defendant pointed that he was assaulted by four police officers in the pantry of police station.

Far From The Truth: Police Pirate Photo and Distort Fact in Promotional Material

United Social Press (USP) published a statement on December 5 condemning the Hong Kong Police Force for the infringement of copy right and the distortion of facts.

A photo taken by USP on November 2 was appropriated by the police in their promotion material without clearing any copy right. To make the matter worse, the police provided an untrue caption to the photo to mislead the readers. The police claimed in their poster, "police officers have no time to have dinner because of their work"; however, according to USP's original description, the policemen in the photo collasped after inhaling the tear gas deployed by the police.

Pro-Establishment Lawmaker Ann Chiang Lai Wan: The Government should set up an independent commission of inquiry to prove police are vindicated

The motion to impeach the Chief Executive is debating in the Legislative Council. Vice Chairperson of the pro-Beijing party DAB, Ann Chiang Lai Wan, pointed out that many social events are now directed at the police, including the death of 15-year-old Chan Yin-lam, the fall of HKUST student Chow Chow Tsz-lok, the allegations from CUHK students of sexual assault by police officers.

She believes the establishment of an independent commission of inquiry can clear the police from the allegations and prove their innocence.

HKUST’s Denial on Election Result of Student Council Member Arouse Discontent

Two months ago, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its Student Council Member Election, in which Miss Fu beat her pro-china opponent by a record-breaking 1000 votes. Despite the landslide victory, the school delayed the appointment over its claims of alleged electioneering from the Student Union, and started an investigation in which results were promised to be released on October 1. Since then no comments or results came out. The school eventually declared its denial to the election results and announced a re-election in the next semester, arousing widespread discontent among students.

The Student Union made a statement on December 5, comdemning the school’s behaviour of blaming the Student Union for the lost of the pro-china candidate, comparing the action with the pro-China politician Starry Lee who had falsely attributed her election loss to black-clad protestors besieging polling stations. The Student Union anathematized the school with “turning a blind eye to the public will”, and announced they will submit a list of high-level school officials to the Higher Institutions International Affairs Delegation to call for sanction from the international community.

Note:
Refusal to include a full-time student-elected in the School Council was against the HKUST Ordinance (Cap.1141) Article 9(i).

According to them, a large group of around 20 police officers forcefully entered into the restaurant at around 21:30 on December 4, 2020, citing the enforcement of social distancing rule as a reason.

HK Education Chief Denies Charges of Turning Liberal Studies subject into pro-China National Education

Hong Kong's Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung Yun-hung spoke on the government's plan to reform the Liberal Studies subject in a radio program hosted by RTHK on Dec 5, 2020.

He claimed that national education content in the Liberal Studies subject is not new and it is an "essential part" of the syllabus.

He said visiting China is "necessary" for Hong Kong students, and national education could "help" students know the “truth” and "cultivate the national sentiments".

He said that the Education Bureau was handling 40 complaints related to teachers. One of them was severe and was waiting for the defence of a relevant teacher.

Earlier, Chief Executive Carrie Lam openly stated what she called "controversy" about the Liberal Study in Hong Kong. Lam claimed that the subject is "a problem" since it became a compulsory subject in Hong Kong's high schools in 2009.

The authorities insisted that the course should be reviewed, for instance, by changing the methodology of assessment and cancelling the Independent Enquiry Study (#IES). The grade will only be a “pass” or a “fail”.

In the radio programme, the Education Bureau Chief claimed that visiting China can "enhance students' knowledge about the country". She spoke of the "misconception" in the society, that the Education Bureau was accused of turning liberal study into national education.

The government placed the new emphasis of Liberal Studies subject in China's development and the cultivation of national identity.

Yeung said, “Hong Kong students should have a clear understanding of the relationship with the state and the development of the country.” He emphasised, “Hong Kong is a part of China. National education was not something 'new' in liberal studies. Something is added, but it is not wholly new."
