Citizen journalist detained over Wuhan reporting 'restrained and fed by tube'

Zhang Zhan, a citizen journalist and 37-year-old former lawyer, has been on a hunger strike at a detention facility near Shanghai. Zhang was arrested in May and accused of “picking quarrels and stirring up trouble”, an accusation frequently used against critics and activists inside China, after reporting on social media and streaming accounts.

Zhang has been detained for more than six months after reporting on the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak. Last month she was formally indicted on charges of spreading false information.

Zhang was previously detained on similar accusations by Chinese authorities in 2018, and again in 2019 for voicing support for Hong Kong activists. She denies the charge of falsifying information, telling her lawyer that all the information was gathered firsthand through interviews with Wuhan residents.

China Jails Citizen Journalist Zhang Zhan
EU said She was Being Tortured, and Pompeo said the Case Reflects CCP Fears of Truthtellers

Chinese citizen journalist Zhang Zhan traveled to Wuhan to make the news coverage regarding the Wuhan Virus pandemic. She was accused of picking quarrels and provoking trouble, putting her in prison for four years. The European Union (EU) said in a statement yesterday calling for an immediate release of Zhang and cited from credible sources that she had been tortured during detention. The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also issued a statement condemning China strongly for its false prosecution and conviction of Zhang, which reflected the CCP's fears of citizens who speak the truth.

The EU called for the immediate release of Zhang in a statement yesterday (29th). They also disclosed according to reliable sources, Zhang had been subjected to torture and ill-treatment during her detention, resulting in the severe deterioration of her health condition. They added that Zhang must receive adequate medical assistance. "The increasing restrictions on freedom of speech, access to information, intimidation and surveillance of journalists, as well as detentions, trials, and sentencing of human rights defenders, lawyers, and intellectuals in China will continue to be a major concern."

Citizen Journalist Zhang Zhan Seen Looking Haggard After Hunger Strike in Chinese Prison

The photos of citizen Journalist Zhang Zhan's appearance in court have been released. Zhang is said to have been undergoing a hunger strike for six months, and is seen looking haggard and in a wheelchair when appearing before the court accompanied by two court police in China.

Wang Jianhong, a supporter of the #FreeZhangZhan movement, posted the photos on Twitter, which were taken back in 28 December 2020 when Zhang stood trial at Shanghai Pudong People's Court.

The tweet mentioned Zhang was bound and forced to face the court, stating that, "the wheelchair she was in had a wide belt binding her to the back of her wheelchair preventing movement. She was wearing handcuffs." The tweet also mentioned that Zhang's mother stated to the media that Zhang looked "haggard and thin to the bone" when looked from behind.

Zhang Zhan, who conducted a hunger strike and once rebuked a judge with "This is where we judge you for your sins, not mine", was convicted of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble" after posting videos on quarantine measures and the medical situation in Wuhan, and sentenced to four years in prison.

Zhang's lawyer had reported seeing Zhang with a NG tube, while being bound around the wrists and waist.

CCP Uses Health Code as a Surveillance Tool - Dissidents Query

Epidemic prevention has given the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) an easy excuse to impose #HealthCode in Chinese cities.

In recent days, the health codes of a number of social activists in China have been switched to red or experienced unusual app errors for no apparent reasons. They question whether the Health code has become a tool for CCP to tighten their fist over dissidents, curbing their freedom to travel and move around cities.

#XiYan, one of the civil rights lawyers involved in the 709 crackdowns, wanted to visit the mother of Zhang Zhan, a citizen journalist and a former lawyer in Shanghai.

Ignoring local police's disapproval, Xi went ahead with his plan, only to find that his health code switched to red.

Xi shared a photograph of himself in the airport and his health code in red on social media.

#WangYu, another human rights lawyer, posted on Twitter on November 7 that she was strained in Tianjin as she failed to update her health code on her way back to Beijing.

Wang's husband, #BaoLongJun who is also a human rights lawyer, also could not generate a health code on his phone on his way from Suzhou back to Beijing.
