Why should we #BoycottMulan?

Disney's upcoming live-action remake of Mulan is marketed to be the embodiment of cultural sensitivity and female empowerment. Historically, Mulan has been established as a strong female character desperately needed in mainstream media, and her status as the first Asian Disney princess has inspired children all over the world.

It is therefore difficult to reconcile the message Disney is trying to portray with the actions of the star of the movie, Liu Yifei. Liu, a Chinese-American actress well-known in China, recently shared a public post in support of the Hong Kong Police Force. The post was widely shared in Chinese media in response to the Hong Kong protests against police brutality.

Since the protests against the controversial Anti-Extradition Bill began in June, the Hong Kong Police Force has committed countless acts of police brutality and has proved to be extremely misogynistic. Case in point, during the protests on 12 June 2019, the police dragged a defenceless female protestor on the ground, causing her underwear to be exposed and forbid her to cover herself. A similar situation happened again on 4 August 2019, when a female protestor's skirt and underwear were dragged off in the arrest attempt and humiliated by forcibly exposing her crotch as she was carried off. Outside of the recent protests, the Hong Kong Police Force had also charged a woman for "using her breast to assault a policeman" back in 2015.

Beyond the misogyny, the Hong Kong Police Force has consistently exercised excessive force in arrest attempts and during efforts to disperse protestors. While unrelated to the recent protests, it was revealed earlier this week that two police officers had tortured and humiliated an elderly detainee by, amongst other things, stripping him, sexually assaulting him with a police baton and humiliating him by shoving his soiled clothes in his face. There are also countless reports of police officers aiming at protestors' heads when firing non-lethal weapons in close range, as well as beating surrendered individuals.

As a celebrity and the embodiment of a feminist icon, it is extremely harmful for Liu to propagate a message in support of police brutality and misogyny. In contrast with Liu, Disney princess alum Emma Watson is an avid advocate of feminism, and has recently used her platform to launch a legal advice line for those who are suffering from sexual harassment at work.

Furthermore, as a Chinese-American individual, Liu's support for police brutality also proves to be a tone-deaf response to the oppression currently experienced by POCs in the United States.

In order to hold corporations such as Disney to their social accountability, we should #BoycottMulan.

Much Boycotted 'Mulan' Release Pushed Back Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

//Disney is pushing the release of its upcoming live-action tentpole Mulan amid growing concerns around the coronavirus, the studio said Thursday. The movie was set to hit theaters in North America on March 27.

//Disney is looking into new release dates for all of the titles later this year.

//While no theaters are yet closed in the U.S. because of the coronavirus, there is growing concern that some cinemas could go dark in areas where cases of COVID-19 are proliferating, or where business has slowed. That is in addition to the ongoing blackout on moviegoing in China. (Mulan did not yet have a Chinese release date.)

Disney's new movie starring pro-Beijing actress did not enjoy a head start

Disney's live-action adaptation of Mulan, plagued by the #BoycottMulan scandal after starring actress Liu Yifei vocally supported HK Police during anti-ELAB protests last year, may be seeing its final undoing at the box office due to the global Wuhan coronavirus outbreak.

Costing USD $200 million for production, the film only managed to gross $874 over the first two weeks, with the opening day's sale only $83. Due to quarantine measures around the world, the film has only managed to premiere in Norway.

Originally expected to be a blockbuster, Disney has announced that the movie's release would be delayed due to the pandemic. However, it is hard to tell if it will premiere in other countries due to the ongoing outbreak.

Pro-Democracy Activists Around the World Call On Freedom-Loving People to Boycott Disney's Mulan Played by Pro-Police Violence Chinese Actress

Disney's new film Mulan, featuring Chinese actress Liu Yifei, is available on the video streaming platform Disney+ since September 4, 2020.

The female lead Liu Yifei is known for her open support for the Hong Kong police as early as August 2019. On her Chinese social media account Weibo, Liu shared a post by China state-media People's Daily with the heading "I support Hong Kong Police, You can hit me now. What a shame for Hong Kong". Her pro-police stance has triggered calls for boycotting the film Mulan soon after Disney announced the cast.

On September 5, 2020, pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong on Twitter urged Hongkongers not to support the pro-police violence Liu and asked all freedom-loving people to boycott the film.

Veteran Chinese pro-democracy activist and writer Wang Dan also shared news about the boycott for Mulan in Taiwan after the film was released in theatre.

Wang reminded his readers:

"if you still remember how Hong Kong youngsters--many of them have not even reached their 20s--were violated by the police...

If you also think that celebrities like Liu Yifei who make money by forsaking their conscience do not deserve...

If you agree that justice and righteousness are worth more than a film..."

Wang said there is not much one can actually do for Hongkongers, but "at least one can stand against pro-Chinese Communist Party artists together".

Controversy over Disney's new film Mulan started in August 2019 after Chinese actress Liu Yifei, portraying the titular heroine, supported police in Hong Kong who have been criticized for using excessive force against protesters.

The actress posted the following message on the Chinese micro-blog Weibo:

"ā€œI support the Hong Kong police. You can all attack me nowā€ (in Chinese) and ā€œWhat a shame for Hong Kong" (in English).

With the growth of anti-authoritarian sentiments around the world, more and more people from different countries exhibited solidarity in their resistance against Chinese influence.

The Milk Tea Alliance is one example connecting citizens from Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan who are concerned with democracy and human right issues.

The Alliance originates from an internet meme responding to the Chinese nationalist netizens' attack of a Thai celebrity couple for showing support for Hong Kong and Taiwan over the social media.

Backing up their peers in Hong Kong and Taiwan, Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, a Thai student activist, also called for #BoycottMulan and #BanMulan .

Disney Thanks Chinese Communist Party's Secret Agency Despite Their Brutal Crackdown on Uyghurs

After its lead actress' pro-police violence statement, Disney's new film Mulan was found acknowledging the Chinese Communist Party's security agency and entities in Xinjiang.

It was suggested that Disney may have sent its crew to Xinjiang in 2017, despite the Chinese government's increasing crackdown on Ugyhurs.

It is estimated that the Chinese government has imprisoned over 1 milliion uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in concentration camps for "reform", forcing them to give up their original languages, habits, cultures and religion.

The 8 entities acknowledged by Disney in Mulan's credits included the police bureau in Turpan, a city with large Uyghur population that has been subjected to mass surveillance and control by the CCP.
