Mistreatment for Africans in China - The Standard Procedure of Human Rights Suppression

The story of Africans in China is typical of how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) treat immigrants, that is, they flatter you and use you when they need your money and labor, but insult you and dispose of you once you are spent. The root cause of the problem is that the CCP never enforced a coherent and effective policy to manage the growth of African population in China (Guangzhou in particular). From 1997 to 2008, African immigrants were let unchecked. Many of them tore up their passports, earned their living by criminal acts, and used any tactic, no matter how repulsive the the locals, to try to stay in China. From 2009 onward, the Chinese locals saw the Africans as untrustworthy and harmful to the their societies and economies. Racial integration by marriage has been negligible. Locals took photographs of residing Africans and branded them as potential criminals on the internet. Racial slurs are increasingly in use by the general public. China suddenly feels like a lonely place, as the CCP government has not taken any substantial step to ease racial tension.

Africans in China 1/2

African travellers and even senior government representatives of certain African countries in particular Nigeria, Uganda, and Kenya were at the receiving end of racism in Mainland China. While in Guangzhou, they were rejected at check-ins. Hotels staff claimed that they received orders from police and other authorities to do so for crime concerns despite the Chinese government denying giving such orders. Feeling discriminated by the races; some Africans back in their home countries are also suspected that the massive scale of Chinese trade and investments in Africa is a form of neo-colonialism because of the unequal share of power in their relationship. Whether in Africa or in China, the Chinese seemed not well prepared to embrace and engage with their African counterparts on an equitable base other than seeking to maximize Chinese interests as their main priority.

How Africans view
racism in China: “They won’t even sit next to me”

We invited a few Africans that are studying or working in mainland China or Hong Kong to talk about their life in China and how the locals see them.

Q: Are you treated any differently in the city versus in the village?

Many interviewees have expressed that the experience in the city and village is drastically different, but most are not ill-willed.

Berthold Ackon from Ghana is studying Chinese in Beijing Language and Culture University and often uploads videos of interviews with other Africans in China on social media. He recalls that in big cities like Guangzhou, other locals would not mind his presence and would continue their business as usual, which is completely different from his experiences in small cities and villages.

“Some people would stare at me, some would take photos of me with their phones.”

China says Wall Street Journal admitted mistake after its reporters were expelled

(26 Feb) Three journalists with the Wall Street Journal’s Beijing bureau were ordered to leave China after the publication of a 3 Feb column headlined the “real sick man of Asia”. None were involved in the opinion piece or its headline, however.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang accused the newspaper of using “a racially discriminatory title, triggering indignation and condemnation among the Chinese people and the international community”. He said, “China demands the WSJ recognise the severity of its mistake, make an official apology and hold the persons involved accountable.”

The newspaper's spokesman declined to comment when contacted by Reuters. US President Donald Trump stated that China’s move was unfair and that the US gave very good access to Chinese journalists. This incident has sparked an intense debate within the administration and whether they should expel Chinese journalists in response.

A foreigner talks about his experience of both positive and negative discrimination in China.

- 99% mainland Chinese are racist towards African Black people, whereas White people usually receive positive discrimination.
⁃ 99% imported cases in China are overseas Chinese, but the CCP doesn’t mention this and foreigners living in China are now being seen as the root cause of imported cases, even they have the green QR code and have not left China ever since January.
⁃ Foreigners are now banned from entering bars, KTVs, restaurants, hair salons or even supermarkets etc. Discrimination is everywhere in daily life.
⁃ Although iscrimination does happens everywhere in the world, those are Individual cases and all are condemned by the society and media. Whereas in China, the government, CCP, actually allows, promotes and even give clear instructions to the people to be racist. Such action is praised by the CCP. This is unique in the world.

Many netizens on behalf of Taiwanese apologized to Tedros
Taiwanese Investigation Bureau found Chinese Netizens did it

(11 Apr) Tedros, director of WHO, said before that he had been subjected to racist comments and death threats for months. His speech caused a lot of controversy. Then, many messages on behalf of Taiwanese apologizing to Tedrso appeared quickly. After Taiwan Investigation Bureau started an investigation, it was found that it may be done by Chinese Netizens.

Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau (MJIB) held a press conference lately and published an investigation report showing that many posts in twitter about “I am Taiwanese, I am ashamed of the racial discrimination and maliciously attacks to Tedros by Taiwanese. On behalf of Taiwanese, I would like to apology to Tedros and black population. I beg for his pardon.” A large amount of similar messages were found, therefore MJIB believed it was manipulated by foreign forces, and decided to investigate and find out the source.

They found a Twitter account of a broadcast website was the first one to leave message related to apologize for different European and American media. After that, a Chinese radio twitter account copied that message as an apology template, and even provided photo of Taiwanese IDs to urge other twitter users to use them to pretend as Taiwanese and publish apology tweets. Other netizens found it was interesting. MJIB has already found nearly 100 similar posts, and they would continue to investigate this incident, and urged people to be cautious to identify fake news on the Internet.

Racist Comments Against Black People Surge on Chinese Social Media Platform

Chinese netizens have been found insulting black people on Weibo, one of China's biggest social media platforms. The racist comments blame black people for exacerbating the pandemic and being culturally inferior.

Below are translations of some of the comments made by Chinese netizens:

Sdemy: "Black people are the worst. Why do we even have to treat them as humans?"

Isabellae3: "Black people are the lowest form of people. They are lazy and commit crimes, like barbarians. Just look at France - it's going to be corroded by the Africans. The world should start culling black people. Who cares if I'm a racist!

The Chinese Government has FOOLED you!

Youtuber SerpentZA recounts some of his friends' experiences dealing with the recently intensified racism in China. State-endorsed discrimination comes in the form of segregation on flights reminiscent of Rosa Parks, being called an "American virus", evicting Africans from apartments and forcing them to leave the country on short notice, among other examples.

When China first realised that the epidemic was a crisis, the government put Wuhan on lockdown but allowed departing international flights. It "didn't care that the virus… spread to your country", only that it did not spread within its borders.

At the same time, "China banned the export of masks and vital medical supplies". Foreign products manufactured in China were hoarded locally. The government also “ordered all state-linked companies abroad to… liberate” them from foreign countries.

He calls attention to China's attempt to save face, "the appearance that something is more important than its substance [by] spending immense amounts of money and state resources on soft power". The state-run media talks about racism and xenophobia against Chinese and Asians overseas to divert attention away from the "very real racist policies" within. "If you have ever… looked at China in a positive light… it means that their manipulative ways have worked on you."

"This is only the tip of the iceberg. China does not have this thing under control."

Incident of the Chinese Ambassador's Fake Apology

(13 Apr) "China finally has its day of reckoning." China's counter-epidemic inspection measures have targeted African residents in Guangzhou. In the past week, this became an intercontinental diplomatic issue. Although the Chinese government emphasised that isolation measures for foreigners were non-discriminatory, expats from various African countries continually reported back home the collective discrimination they experienced. Even international students who "have not left China in the past two years" were forced into isolation. These events sparked protests from many African countries. The Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives summoned the Chinese Ambassador and demanded an "official explanation". Unexpectedly, Nigerian news media took a screenshot from the meeting and titled it "The Chinese Ambassador bowed in apology". The image started trending rapidly online in Africa. However, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs tersely issued a clarification, stating that the Chinese Ambassador was merely looking down at the cell phone. "Any other interpretation of the scene does not conform with what was actually there during the meeting."

//The scene in the screenshot gives the odd impression that the Chinese Ambassador was "bowing 90 degrees while being lectured".

//the screenshot may have been "intentionally" taken out of context. Speculations included that it was a "deliberate trap" for the Nigerian government to account for public grievances.
