"Pass On the Spirit of June 4": Ms. Wong Attends Taikoo Vigil with Young Daughter

Photo
: ⬆️

A young girl attended the vigil in Taikoo with her mothe with a June 4 remembrance candle in hand. When being asked, she said she didn't know the details of what happened on that night in 1989. Ms. Wong, her mother, said her daughter only remembered the scene of tanks rolling into the city. They both attended the June 4 vigil in Victoria park last year.

Ms. Wong believes that the spirit of June 4 must be passed down to the next generation, just as it had been passed down to her from her father, who brought her to the annual vigils when she was young. She is quite disappointed that the police had denied the vigil this year; she said that it makes for a more impactful image when a large number of people gather to in remembrance.

Remembering June 4 is about justice and staying true to your beliefs, she continued. When she brought her daughter into this world, she had never imagined Hong Kong would turn out like this. She is concerned that, in the future, schools in Hong Kong might no longer teach the facts of June 4 truthfully; however, she stressed that she would teach her daughter, so that she would know right from wrong. Even if the National Security Law comes into force in Hong Kong, she insists she would commemorate the date in other ways.

Raptor Police Contradicts himself while giving testimony

Three protesters were arrested during the police-citizen conflict on 28 July 2019. The police officer who made the arrest, Yim, changed his testimony several times during the hearing and was questioned by the defendant if he was lying. Yim first claimed he found respirators and helmets in the defendant’s backpack, and contradicted himself later by saying these objects were hung on the defendant’s bag. He also stated he was unsure of how the defendant climbed over a fence, and later said he remembered and demonstrated the action himself.

Yim stated that he did not receive any orders to make the arrest. The judge then questioned him why the arrest was not handled by a group of police who arrived at the scene earlier. The judge also questioned what made Yim felt he was responsible for making the arrest, to which Yim responded: "My initiative and instinct made me do so." The defendant counsel also pointed out that Yim was not the first officer to arrive at the scene, and he was not of the highest rank, making it unreasonable for him to make the arrest.

First June Fourth Vigil in Hong Kong Without an Organiser

Although the 31st June Fourth Vigil was banned by the Hong Kong government, thousands of citizens went to Victoria Park to commemorate the victims of the Tiananmen Massacre in 1989.

Pro-democracy lawmakers, district councillors and activists including Chu Hoi-dick, Lester Shum and Nathan Law went to the Victoria Park as participants played “Glory to Hong Kong” and yelled slogans like “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times”.

Tsuen Wan District Councillor Lester Sham said this was a meaningful June Fourth Vigil having no organiser. He suggested that participants had different viewpoints during this event, but it is this diversity that makes Hong Kong different from China.

Statue artist couldn’t believe University-initiated disturbances are oppressing his freedom of expression

Students of Hong Kong Polytechnic University produced and exhibited a series of plaster statues of HK protesters. Without informing the student union, the school took away these plaster statues and some statues were severely damaged.

Statue artist, Ben was furious and is considering of seeking redress through civil claims or small claims tribunal from the school. He said, “I am fully aware of potential disturbances from people with opposing political stances. Similar incidences happened to the Lennon Wall built on campus. However, I couldn’t believe that these troubles actually came from inside the University.”
