Chinese Man Pays Vandals to Attack Pro-Hong Kong Restaurant in Taiwan

On October 16, 2020, Aegis, a restaurant in Taiwan which has been providing work for pro-democracy Hongkongers in exile, was vandalized by four men with feces.

The suspects were arrested the following day by the Taiwanese police. The four men admitted they were paid 15,000TWD to carry out the vandalization.

Taiwanese authorities are tracking down a mainland Chinese man who instigated the four to carry out the attack.

According to Taiwan news outlets, the Taipei District Prosecutors Office has closed their investigation on the case in October 2020. The suspects were charged for public insult, and causing harms and damages.

The police pointed out that a man surnamed Chen funded the vandalization, and is currently in China. They are still investigating the identity of the man behind the scene and his motive.

Pro-democracy Fruit Store in Hong Kong Vandalized after Opening Day, Owner Undeterred: "I'll Keep Doing the Right Things"

In Hong Kong on May 19, 2021, the fruit store chain #BrosFruit, outspoken for their pro-democracy stance, opened their Tung Lok street branch in Yuen Long. The very next morning, the store was vandalized by unknown people with red paint, leaving red trails at the storefront and shutters.

The owner #LeungTungKee continued business despite the red paint on the walls, a common intimidation tactic of gangs in the city.

He says that this has never happened in other branches before, and believes the attack is related to their outspoken political stance. He also said that his conscience is clear, and will continue with the fresh fruit business: "I'll keep doing the right things." Although, he admits, it is hard to prevent similar attacks.

BrosFruit was established in mid-2018 as an e-shop with fruit delivery, then expanded to three brick-and-mortar stores. Since the anti-ELAB movement broke out in Hong Kong 2019, Leung had condemned the police brutality multiple times, and supported the strike. Many of his staff had also been contributors to the pro-democracy movement.

HK Police Raids #AppleDaily Again: 3 Editors and 2 Executives Arrested for Breaching National Security Law

Apple Daily, the only pro-democracy newspaper in print in Hong Kong, has been the target of the national security police since the forced implementation of the national security law in the city in June 2020.

Even though founder #JimmyLai had already been arrested and remains in custody, the Hong Kong police continues to raid the headquarters of the newspaper and its parent company; seizing documents, computers and journalistic materials; and making arrests.

In the raid on June 17, 2021, the police deployed 500 officers and arrested five executives including editor-in-chief #RyanLaw.

The other four are deputy editor #ChanPuiMan, chief executive editor #CheungChiWai, chief executive #NextDigital #CheungKimHung, and the chief operating officer #ChowTatKuen.

Authorities claimed that the newspaper published articles allegedly calling for "foreign sanctions" and had been "colluding with foreign forces", thus has violated the national security law.

Some of the articles cited date back to 2019, before the law's implementation.  The government had previously promised that the new law would not be applied to offences before the law had come into effect.

Meanwhile, Secretary for Security #JohnLee ordered freezing HK$18 million worth of assets from Apple Daily Limited, Apple Daily Printing Limited and AD Internet Limited, all under Jimmy Lai's Next Digital Limited.  Li openly asked the public and the media to cut ties with the executives of Apple Daily.

When asked, Li admitted the government's intention to prevent the pro-democracy newspaper from being printed before July 1, 2021, the anniversary of the Hong Kong SAR's establishment, when large-scale protest takes place every year.

HKGovernment's Crackdown Causes Hundreds of District Councillors to Resign; Tommy Cheung Sau-yin criticizes: “Why leaving when we've done nothing wrong?”

In Hong Kong, directly elected district councillors are expected to take an oath of allegiance for the Basic Law within July 2021. However, a recent notice from the government claimed that the district councillors would be disqualified and asked to returned the salary they receivrd since they took office.

If this is the case, each person would have to pay back more than one million Hong Kong dollars.

As of July 9, nearly 100 pro-democracy #DistrictCouncillors announced their resignation one after another, while some of them said they would stay behind.

Yuen Long District Councillor #Tommy Sau-yin Cheung announced on social media platform on the morning of July 9, 2021 that he would not resign.

Cheung said, “I decide to uphold the public authorization since winning the election, and continue to take the last path of my political life”. He also stated that he would not regret making this decision.

He said the government has no justifiable reason nor legal basis to deprive him of his qualification as a District Councillor.

Tuen Mun District Councillor Kenneth Cheung Kam-hung pointed out that the government was using intimidation tactics to make District Councillors retreat and weaken the voice of the opposition.

Vice Chairman of Kwai Tsing District Council Cheung Man-lung commented that the resignation of a large amount of pro-democracy District Councillors will paralyze the district-level work and will cause inconvenience to fellow citizens.

National Security Police Raids June 4 Museum in Hong Kong, Damaging Exhibits and Locking Out Owner

On September 9, 2021, the national security police in Hong Kong raided the already-closed June 4 museum in Mong Kok.

This is followed by the arrest of four core members of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China.

Police carried off display boards, the museum's logo, material showing #XiJinping and #MaoZedong, 39 boxes of books, as well as other items, and took them away in a truck. Some exhibition panels were damaged in the process.

When a former member went to examine the museum site after the raid, he found that the security camera had been removed, and electric cable were damaged. The door lock had also been changed, and he could not enter the museum. On the gate, the national security police left a handwritten note: "'contact the Mongkok Police Station".

The Alliance had been the organizer of the annual June 4 candlelight vigil since 1990. The event as well as the museum aimed to remember the Tiananmen Massacre by the Chinese Communist Party on June 4, 1989.

Hong Kong Alliance Chairpersons Charged with "Inciting Subversion of State"

On September 10, 2021, the Department of Justice (#DoJ) in Hong Kong laid charges of "Inciting subversion of state power" against the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, as well as its chairperson #LeeCheukYan, and co-chairs #AlbertHo and #ChowHangTung.

The Alliance was informed of the charges via the Hong Kong police, whose National Security department had yesterday carried off a large number of items from the Alliance's June 4 museum as evidence.

The case was brought to court on September 10, 2021. The court denied Chow's application for bail, while Lee and Ho have been detained for long under other charges relating to the pro-democracy movement.

[Editor's note: The same charge of "inciting subversion" were used by China against activists of the 1989 Tiananmen protests, which the Alliance commemorated in a candlelight vigil every year. It had not been applicable to Hong Kong until the introduction of the #NationalSecurityLaw in 2020.]

Civil Society Groups Issue Joint Statement, Concerns over Attacks on Hongkongers in UK

A statement was issued by Hong Kong-led civil society groups and its allies, following a violent attack on Hongkongers during a rally that took place in London on 27 November, 2021.

In the UK, Hongkongers and other members of East and South East Asian communities have been exposed to threats and intimidation.

There were messages circulating on #WeChat,a texting app from China, about putting a 'bounty' on Hong Kong pro-democracy activists #SimonCheng and #NathanLaw, offering £10,000 to anyone who could offer their UK addresses.

Besides, there were also messages seeking to create "vigilante groups" to attack any HongKongers' groups in support of Hong Kong independence.

The statemdnt expressed grave concern over the tactics of intimidation which not only threatens the safety and security of Hongkongers and supporters of Hongkongers’ struggles; but also infringe Hongkongers’ fundamental right to freedom of expression.
