Reporter from Stand News attended a press conference organised by a district councilor-elect on Dec 21, addressing noise problems with Chinese street performers in Tuen Mun Park. At 2:45pm, 5-6 riot police stopped and searched the reporter at the entrance of the park.

Riot police shouted and demanded the reporter to “stay put” and “stand still”. The reporters then asked for an explanation, but none was given. The cell phone used for filming was snatched away. The police ordered the reporter to empty their backpack and turn off their cell phone. The reporter's bag was torn in the process.

After checking the reporter’s ID card and press ID, the police officers warned them to “stand very still” and “don’t run around like we’re playing Catch”, “you (reporters) are not in charge” and “you should stop filming when you’re told to do so”.

The riot police asked the reporter to reveal any news and information they have on activities in the Tuen Mun Park area. The police also pressed the reporter to explain why they brought helmet and protective gear, claiming that these equipments are not needed in normal interviews.

The police reasserted that journalists should be completely cooperative once stopped for searches: ”Stop filming when you were told to. You’re being searched now.” After 10 minutes of interrogation, the reporter was allowed to pack their belongings to leave. However, no compensation was given for the torn gear bag.

Stand News strongly condemns the police officers for using violence to obstruct reporters' work.

President of International Association of Lawyers Rejected From Chinese Global Lawyers Forum; Ministry of Justice, "The lawyers spoke freely"

The Global Lawyers Forum, organised by the Ministry of Justice of the PRC, was hosted in Guangzhou earlier this month. Jerry Roth, President of the International Association of Lawyers, was originally invited to speak at the Forum, but was rejected after he submitted his speech for review.

The contents of Roth’s speech is centered around the definition of rule of law and the importance of judicial independence. He stated that lawyers have a responsbility to protect the rule of law and other lawyers.

The International Association of Lawyers expressed disappointment towards the decision, and criticised the Chinese Government for twisting the rule of law by advocating for a “Rule of Law With Chinese Style”.

The Ministry of Justice of the PRC later issued a public statement of the event, which applauded the event for being the China's first international event for lawyers. Over 57 countries and 800 groups “spoke freely” on “scientific and technological progress and legal services”, which was the theme of the Forum.

After loosing both his parents and living with his brother, the 15-year-old received a traumatic blow to the head from a tear gas canister fired by the police back in November. After receiving an emergency brain surgery, the teenager, surnamed Chung had since been in a coma in an intensive care unit for a month. Mr Zuk, the Teenager Services Director for the Evangelical Lutheran Church who have been following up Chung’s case stated that Chung has awoken from his coma and can be transferred out of the ICU. However, he still reacts slowly to external stimuli and it is difficult to estimate the progress of his rehabilitation.

Chung suffered a fracture in his parietal bone of the skull after being hit in the head by a tear gas canister. That night, he had to go through an emergency brain surgery and had to rely on a life support unit. He required a feeding tube for a full week after his surgery. Although he was in stable condition, he was in a constant coma and only woke up occasionally. His hands and head had slight responses to stimuli.

Exhausted First-aiders Stood by to Ensure Everyone was Safe

"Christmas Shopping with You" was held in Harbour City on December 21, which was followed by mass searching and arrests by riot police, leading to injuries to staff and tourists alike.

Even though most people had left by 9pm, voluntary first-aiders did not go away but chose to stand by. Lonely and tired they stood, yet steadfast their faith remained. They are never born to suffer such exhaustion, but they still hold their ground. They are true guardians of Hong Kong.
