Sai Kung residents staged a protest against the government's proposal to turn Sai Kung Outdoor Recreation Center into quarantine facilities, while some suspected that the government has already arranged people under mandatory 14-day quarantine to stay.

Paritipated residents protested peacefully. However, the situation got tense after riot police set cordon lines, raised blue warning flag, stormed into Lakeside Garden and pepper-sprayed residents and presses in the scene. In addition, plainclothes police arrested civilians.

Civilians were hit on head during police arrest. One of them lost conscious with a pool of blood appear on the ground. Riot police freaked out and shouted for help from First Aid volunteers.

"Another reporter recklessly beaten and arrested by police while covering live news"
Message from the Chief Editor of Maddog.HK - Leung Kam Cheung

(10 Feb) When I was writing this piece, our colleague was still detained at Tseung Kwan O Police Station. Our reporters faced many interruptions, unreasonable arrest and even accusations of being "black reporters" by the police during regular news coverage. I feel obligated to explain the full incident to our readers.

Citizens commemorated the death of Chow Tsz Lok on Feb 8 in Sheung Tak Estate, Tseung Kwan O despite the coronavirus outbreak. Nevertheless, the unrelenting government gave no room for the city to grieve and police dispersed the crowds with excessive violence. Many citizens were arrested. When one of our journalists attempted to capture the face of an arrestee, the police commander immediately shouted: "black reporter, arrest him!" He was wearing a press card registered with the Information Services Department. When he was subdued, his head struck the ground. The police continued to hit his head with batons.

Residents: Replacing the Government and Introducing Universal Suffrage is the Only Solution

200 residents gathered peacefully to oppose the government’s plan in converting Sai Kung Outdoor Recreation Centre into a quarantine centre. The rally initiated by a district council member was held in Sai Kung Waterfront Park and has received a notice of no objection from the police.

There was a similar rally last week decrying the same government plan, which ended with the arrest of 2 civilians. Among them one was injured in the head by the police.

Residents voiced their opinions and raised signs reading “Objection Against Using Sai Kung Outdoor Recreation Centre as A Coronavirus Quarantine Centre “and “Closing the Hong Kong Border is the Only Solution”.

Some residents described the government as “always choosing to be an enemy to the people”; some said the government had already started to convert the location into a quarantine camp. They said they felt very powerless and believed that the problem can only be solved with a replacement of the entire government. “What they are doing is very harmful for the next generation,” one resident said.
