Quarantine Facility Doctor in China: Beijing's Statistics Cannot be Trusted

//China's health authorities on Mar 19 reported no new cases of coronavirus infection in Wuhan... but a local doctor who works at a quarantine facility told Kyodo News that the government tally "cannot be trusted."

The number of novel coronavirus patients in Wuhan, the epicenter of China's virus outbreak, was manipulated in time for President Xi Jinping's visit last week, the doctor said.

A number of symptomatic patients were abruptly released from quarantine early while a portion of testing was suspended.

The number of patients currently undergoing treatment is deliberately being reduced in an effort to show the Xi government's success in combatting the epidemic, he said.

According to the National Health Commission, nearly 58,000 people have been discharged from hospitals in Hubei Province, where Wuhan is the capital.//

Police Arrest Tai Po Pro-democracy District Councilor Twice For llegal Sssembly

Nim-chi Man, a pro-democracy district councilor, was arrested twice within 4 months: once when he was an election candidate in November 2019 when the police charged in an election campaign in Victoria Park; and another time in the evening of March 8 while he patrolled the neighborhood with two other district councilors.

As he was arrested during bail, his lawyer warned him that he might be immediately remanded when he goes to court. Knowing that he might not be able to serve his neighbourhood for a while, Man said he felt letting the community down, althought he did not regrethis decision.

Government presses forward controversial musical fountain project snubbing Council and public disapproval

The Kwun Tong District Council discussed on Mar 18 about the HK$50 million Music Fountain Project at the Kwun Tong Promenade. Despite opposition from district councilors, who passed a motion in early January to halt the construction, the government disregarded the Council’s opposition, pressing the project to continue and claiming that was "out of respect for due process and spirit of the contract".

Councilors pointed out that key district projects should be led by district councils, criticizing the Home Affairs Department’s arrogance, flouting the Council’s views and public opinion. They also questioned how the fountain project could revive Hong Kong's tourism industry and asked for the project to be shelved due to lack of public support.

Being asked whether the project could be suspended or modified, Assistant Director of Home Affairs, Chung Ya-chi, stressed that the District Council and Legislative Council had been actively involved in the project approval and project funding respectively. Chung added that the annual cost of maintance would be around $1.8 million but she refused to disclose contract details quoting trade secret as reasons, reiterating that project suspension could incur additional costs. As for amendments of the project, it should be considered in line with the approved budget framework.

Chung attempted to justify public support of the project, quoting support from more than half of a public poll. It was discredited by the Chairman of the Council, Choy Chak-hung, as the poll was conducted by a pro-government party.

Chinese Businessman Suspected To Be CCP's Agent Sent To Silence Daughter of Jailed Hong Kong Bookseller

Apple Daily requested documents from the Stockholm court on the case relating to Anna Lindstedt, Sweden’s former ambassador to Beijing, after she brokered an unauthorized meeting between Angela Gui and two businessmen who claimed to be able to release Gui's father, Gui Minhai, a Hong Kong bookseller with Swedish citizenship who went missing in 2015 and was jailed in China.

The documents revealed that the “two businessmen” were Kevin Liu, chairman of MiNiSV Holding Ltd. and John Meewella, a Sri Lankan CEO.

In fact, the Swedish personnel had found Liu’s identity suspicious before the incident and had banned his entry into Sweden. Liu had used multiple names and listed different birth dates and birthplace on the official documents.

Experts suspected that Liu is an agent (similar to those in the KGB) appointed by the CCP to silence Angela Gui.

China Buys More Iranian and Venezuelan Oil, in a Test for Biden

China has sharply increased its imports of oil from Iran and Venezuela in a challenge to two Biden administration foreign-policy priorities, according to U.S. officials.

That trend is confirmed by other shipping trackers, some of which see those sales at 1 million barrels a day.

China is also increasingly flouting international sanctions on North Korea and is no longer trying to hide some of its smuggling activity as it seeks to help Pyongyang, U.S. officials said recently.

“The informal Chinese purchases have reduced the need to negotiate on oil sanctions” for Tehran, one Iran-focused U.S. official said.
