US Defense Adds SMIC and CNOOC to Blacklist

The US Department of Defense added four more Chinese companies, including SMIC and CNOOC, with alleged ties to the Chinese military restricting them from receiving certain goods and services from the US.

According to the US Department of Defense, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC), China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC), China International Engineering Consulting Corp., and China Construction Technology Co. are controlled or owned by the Chinese military, bringing the total number of blacklisted Chinese firms to 35.

In September, the US Department of Defense indicated that it was working on a decision on blacklisting SMIC. In the same month, the US Department of Commerce informed some companies that they need to obtain a license before supplying goods and services to SMIC as the products or equipment supplied could be used for military purposes and pose an “unacceptable risk”.

U.S. in talks with Huawei CFO Meng on resolving criminal charges

U.S. prosecutors are discussing a deal with Huawei finance chief Meng Wanzho to resolve criminal charges against her and signaling a potential end to a case that has strained ties between the Unit states, China and Canada. Meng was arrested in Canada in 2018 on bank fraud charges for allegedly “misleading HSBC Holdings Plc about Huawei Technologies Co Ltd’s business dealings in Iran, which was subject to U.S. sanctions.”

According to the Reuters report, “Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular briefing that Meng was innocent, and that the U.S. had ‘choreographed’ the case to contain Chinese high-tech companies.” However, Huawei’s business dealings have been consistently sanctioned by the Trump administration and banned by other governments who believe its 5G network equipment could be used for spying purposes.

The results of her court hearing could possibly resolve part of the US-Canada-China dispute, during which after Meng’s arrest, China stopped importing Canadian canola seeds and detained two Canadian citizens.

United States imposes visa curbs on members of Chinese Communist Party due to “malign influence”

The US Government has had a new immigration policy of restriction CCP members and their families from traveling to the United States. It reduces the maximum validity length of the B1/B2 non-immigrant business and tourist visas from 10 years to one month. The State Department said the measure was aimed at protecting the nation from the part’s malign influence,”, adding CCP works to "influence Americans through propaganda, economic coercion, and other nefarious activities", also stating that the CCP "sends agents to the United States to unabashedly monitor, threaten, and report on Chinese nationals and Chinese-American groups."

China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying called it “an escalated form of political oppression towards China” and that American officials should “stop regarding everyone as spies”.

The new immigration policy “will not mean much” until a COVID-related ban on Chinese travelers is lifted.

WA Museum Boola Bardip denies changes to a China display were due to political pressure

After complaint from WA Chinese consul general, the state museum of Western Australia changed description of Covid-19 as virus “originating in China” and included Taiwan in map of China.

Mark Harrison, a senior lecture in Chinese studies at the University of Tasmania, said this was “not correct” and the museum had overstepped Australia’s own foreign police on Taiwan.

A museum spokeswoman added, “Whatever people’s personal views may be about international politics, as a museum we deal in facts. Suggestions that updates were made in response to coercion are without substance. The changes were made in the interests of factual accuracy.”

European Union condemns China over “irresponsible tweet about Australian military”.

The statement from the EU and Japan come after the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, France and New Zealand criticised the actions a Chinese foreign ministry official in tweeting a digitally created image depicting an Australian solider cutting the throat of a child in Afghanistan.

Japan’s embassy in Canberra reiterated that “trade should never be used as a tool to apply political pressure”, and Japan would “duly consider how to exercise our third party rights if Australia proceeds with their case” at the World Trade Organization against China’s barley tariffs.

“We consider the deliberate dissemination of a fabricated image via social media accounts affiliated with China’s ministry of foreign affairs to be irresponsible, insensitive and not at all constructive, particularly given the subject in question,” the EU’s spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy , Nabila Mascali said
