Will the donated medical supplies ever be able to reach those who need them in China? 2/3

Image 1:
'Yesterday, I helped to coordinate the medical supplies to be transported to the hospitals. Before the traffic police was clearly sure whether we could be discharged according to the new restriction of vehicles in Wuhan (editor’s note: since 26 Jan, Wuhan has implemented a 'restriction of vehicles', banning all means of transport except for the permitted logistical vehicles), a friend of mine had sent all the supplies to the hospital hurriedly.

After completing the task, I quit the group. Later I found out they (group members) had a fight. The supplies were all taken by the cadres. The medical practitioners could not get anything.

What I could do is just to ask the related people for this matter to move on after lodging a complaint. After complaining, we should reserve our strength for something else. I realised later on that it was not the only case. I have attached some screencaps, showing someone who had also encountered similar issues, and I don't know them.

I have asked my friend to report on this case already. I speak up because I hope there would be an improvement on the overall planning and the distribution of supplies. The collaboration among the people should be just a matter of expediency. I hope these chaotic situations are just temporary before heading to the right track. It is understood that the senior staff members do have a need on the supplies, but we would like to put the frontline medical practitioners as our first priority. If the management do not set a good example, things might be fallen into the "Tacitus Trap", which would be a big trouble.'

'The protective suits of our hospital had been expired. The seniors said it’s okay, the expired suits could still be used.

Comment: It is very common. Also, some doctors would wear adult nappies to prevent the need of changing protective suits after going to the toilet. I have seen donations of nappies to the doctors. It is hard to imagine how the female doctors could survive through their menstruation.

Comment: Yes, I heard that some stocks were from 2003 when SARS happened.”

Will the donated medical supplies ever be able to reach those who need them in China? 3/3

'That’s sick. On the registration form of the "collection of masks of different departments", the number of masks taken by the administration departments is much higher than that of the clinical departments. Some people from the executive departments even complained in IM groups that they were denied for requests to get extra masks for their families. And often seen in such groups are some photos with management members wearing N95 masks when visiting the doctors and nurses in the hospitals in surgical masks only. Shame on them.

Comment: Bureaucracy is such a monster.

Comment: Haha. Don't know if I ask people at Douban (a Chinese social platform) to donate masks to hospitals whether there will any response. I'd better not ask, as I have no clue how many of the donated masks could be used by the frontline staff of the hospital.

Comment: It’s a structural problem ”

Image 3:
'It is the same for Wuhan Hospital No.5. Individual donation is not allowed. Those who receive donations privately would be permanently suspended. All the donations of preventive supplies were taken by the hospital, but nothing was disseminated to any the frontline medical practitioners. I am so angry, together with my friends, we have reported the case.

Comment: That’s the most terrifying issue. The so-called "improvement" is just to "forbid doctors to receive donations individually, otheriwse there shall be punishment". However, the doctors couldn’t receive any supplies eventually. How could it be?

Comment: Then they should accept the donated protective gears. If the hospital dare to suspend the doctors, there would be nobody to work anymore.'

Finding similarities between Xi Jinping and Chongzhen Emperor at the end of the Mind Dynasty

Editor's Note: Chongzhen Emperor was the 17th and last Emperor of the Ming Dynasty(1368–1644) as well as the last Han Chinese to reign as Emperor of China. The Chinese often like to use fictional or historical characters to comment on country leaders. The writer of this essay has done a brilliant job of comparing the situation faced by Chongzhen at the end of the Ming Dynasty with the current situation faced by Xi Jinping in modern day China.

(13 Feb) Xi Jinping, with all his political might and abundant technological resources, has been sent into a deep panic over the Wuhan Pneumonia. The whole country is gripped by fear and anxiety, with cities and towns under lockdown, the furor among Chinese citizens could be heard everywhere. A fiery commentary on the subject has been going viral recently on the Internet, perhaps revealing a certain insight (into the current situation in China).

Someone recently published an essay online entitled “Facing the end of the Ming Dynasty, all of Chongzhen’s people were waiting for his orders”, which explained how the Ming Dynasty came to an end under Chonghzhen Emperor’s rule. It was censored shortly after being published but continued to spread among numerous social media circles. Obviously, people were not particularly interested in the history. Rather, they were finding certain similarities between China under Xi Jinping’s rule and how the Ming Dynasty perished under Chongzhen Emperor .

//He killed the most talented ministers, and the remaining officials were incompetent and never spoke out. They only obeyed the Emperor’s orders. In the end, Chongzhen still blamed his advisors for misleading him.

//everyone will seek instructions from the level above. If there is no direction from the senior level, then nothing will be done as it is considered the safest option.

//As for doing things that are beneficial to the state and citizens, that was not part of their duties.

//the speed of the anti-epidemic response would have been determined by Xi’s own understanding of the situation.

A banner sees through the Hong Kong government's attitude on fighting the virus

(5 Mar) Does anyone else share my bafflement on the utility of 3-storey tall banners saying "We Fight the Virus" on buildings in all 18 districts?

We can clearly see if the government is genuinely fighting the epidemic. It is not as if hanging huge banners to announce your work actually proves anything.

In the same space currently occupied by banners, the government could have displayed preventative information like reminding citizens when to wash hands, the steps for correct hand washing, to cover the toilet seat when flushing, proper surgical mask usage, etc. Instead, the government put up a vainglorious and empty 4-word slogan.

The funniest thing is the website URL at the bottom of the banner saying, "For more information on fighting the virus". What information is even on the banner? Why is the same URL shown twice in such a large font? With the money wasted on these banners, I could have been better off spending 1,000 HKD on masks and alcohol sanitizers than on such a tactless public relations campaign. Every day, I see my district councillor friends scramble for just one or two boxes of masks while we are helpless in the face of our oblivious government.

By the way, the QR code is 5 m above the ground. How could I scan it? Are you teasing me for not being 10 feet tall?

The only explanation is that this bureaucratic government does not use its brain. If anyone can see the merits of these banners in fighting the virus, please enlighten me.

Announces Zero New Cases in Hubei but Bans Hubei People Going to Beijing
Chinese citizens: Only Idiots believe it

(23 Mar) China reported zero local coronavirus cases for several consecutive days. Not only has it became the subject of official propaganda, it has also been praised by Tedros Adhanom, Director-General of WHO, as “an amazing achievement”. The sudden drop to zero is very suspicious. Even Hu XIjin, editor-in-chief of China’s mouthpiece, Global Times, expressed concern. Hu worries that there are still possibilities for new local cases, and he calls for local governments to avoid concealing cases in order to blame-shift.

Shortly after, an article named “The most unforgettable day”, written by a Hubei reporter, went viral. The article revealed that although the official number of new coronavirus cases in Wuhan was zero, there were still diagnosed patients in many places. The author described his personal experience on the 19 March, where he witnessed a diagnosed patient and his family being passed around like a ball, from hospital to hospital. At the same time, there were rumours that Tongji Hospital in Wuhan had over 100 newly diagnosed cases on the same day, but the District Mayor refused to report the cases. On the 22 March, the Wuhan Epidemic Prevention and Control Headquarters quickly denied the existence of the newly confirmed cases, although doubts remained.
