Hongkongers Show Their Aspiration for Freedom on June 4th

A June 4th candlelight vigil in memory of the victims of the 1989 Tianamen Massacre had been held annually in Hong Kong; however, this year the authorities opposed the event for the first time.

In the wake of forced implementation of the National Security Law by Beijing, Hongkongers insist to commemorate those who had fought for freedom and stood up for justice in human history.

First June Fourth Vigil in Hong Kong Without an Organiser

Although the 31st June Fourth Vigil was banned by the Hong Kong government, thousands of citizens went to Victoria Park to commemorate the victims of the Tiananmen Massacre in 1989.

Pro-democracy lawmakers, district councillors and activists including Chu Hoi-dick, Lester Shum and Nathan Law went to the Victoria Park as participants played “Glory to Hong Kong” and yelled slogans like “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times”.

Tsuen Wan District Councillor Lester Sham said this was a meaningful June Fourth Vigil having no organiser. He suggested that participants had different viewpoints during this event, but it is this diversity that makes Hong Kong different from China.

HK Government Bans Pro-democracy Group's Flower Stall in Lunar New Year Market

Founded in Hong Kong in 1989, The Alliance in Support of Democratic Patriotic Movements in China organizes the annual June Fourth candlelight vigil at Hong Kong's Victoria Park, in commemoration of the victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre in China.

The Alliance has been running a flower stall at the annual Lunar New Year Market in Hong Kong since 1990 for more than 30 years.

However, after midnight on Feb 6, 2021, the Hong Kong government suddenly terminated the contract for their stall, claiming that they have displayed "irrelevant banners".

In the evening before, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (#FEHD) had ordered the Alliance to remove "banners with political messages" within 2 hours, but without naming them.

The Alliance told Apple Daily that they had no idea which banner carries "political message" in the eye of the government. In the end, they covered the word "donation" and the slogans "Vindicate June Fourth" and "For Freedom, Fight Together".

Despite their willingness to co-operate, the authorities decided to ban the stall completely before they could open. At around 8:30am on Feb 6, the government sent staff to cordon off the area with plastic tape, leaving no ground for discussion.

The chairman of the Alliance Lee Cheuk-yan said that in the past 32 years, the Alliance was able to display similar messages.

Authorities Ban Tiananmen Massacre Vigil for the Second Year in Hong Kong

Since 1990, Hongkongers have been organizing a candlelight vigil annually on June 4th to commemorate the victims of the Tiananmen Sqaure massacre and condemn the Chinese Communist Party for the brutal crackdown of pro-democracy citizens in 1989.

For the second year in a row, the Hong Kong police banned the June 4 vigil at Victoria Park, citing the pandemic as a reason. The authorities also banned the "lest we forget" protest planned on May 30, 2021.

The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, the vigil convenor, pointed out that commemorating June 4 is part of Hongkongers' collective memory in the past 31 years. The Alliance said that they would file an appeal.

Meanwhile, the Secretary for Security John Ka-chiu Lee insisted that any person who join, promote and announce the two events can be sentenced to jail for up to 5 years.

On June 3, 2021, the restaurant Villa Villa Cafe & Bar, located in North Point, Hong Kong, placed boxes of candle for customers and passersby to take.

The annual candlelight vigil in commemoration of the June 4th #TiananmenMassacre has been banned by the Hong Kong police for the second year. The organizer who had been holding the #vigil in #VictoriaPark since 1990 called on Hongkongers to commemorate the pro-democracy victims of the brutal crackdown by the CCP "in each of their own way".

In their facebook page on June 2, 2021, Villa Villa Cafe & Bar wrote that they "made a wrong order of birthday candles". The restaurant welcomed fellow citizens to take them for free. The remaining candles would be donated to a church nearby.

The person-in-charge of the restaurant Mr Tse told InMedia that "everything's in the heart".

June 4, 2021 marks 32 years since the #ChineseCommunistParty government ordered the military to crack down on the pro-democracy civilians, mainly students, on Beijing's #TiananmenSquare in 1989.

The annual #CandlelightVigil held since 1990 in Hong Kong's Victoria Park has been banned for the second year by the Hong Kong Police.

At around 14:45 on June 4, 2021, the Hong Kong police cited the #PublicSecurityOrdinance and blocked six football fields, one basketball court, the central lawn and the running trail in Victoria Park.

The video captured how the police cordonned off the park's foodball field as early as at 14:00. More than 20 police vehicles and over 100 officers were also sighted near the park.

On the same day, the police has arrested two civilians, including the vice-chairperson of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, Chow Hang-tung, for allegedly promoting the commemorative event in social media.
