Police Makes Illogical Demands, Disperses "Illegal" Crowds in Private Area

2114 - 2124 | Mei Foo Sun Chuen

After violent assaults on civilians by the police just 30 minutes ago, which stirred outrage among civilians present, riot police could be seen on standby with tear gas equipment.

A Media Liaison from the police asked repeatedly for reporters on-site to clear a path for them, as they claimed that "they could not see clearly whether residents directly above them were "shouting profanities [at them] or throwing stuff [on them]."

Riot police kept recording the on-goings with their video cameras, and accused the residents above for "incentivizing the people". They then advanced and dispersed crowds on the platform of the residence, which is considered part of a private area. This caused further outrage among residents, who called for the police to leave.

Riot Police Violently Assault Young Civilian in Mei Foo

The new coronavirus continues to spread, as the Hong Kong government refuses to close Hong Kong-China border. Instead of curbing the source of the coronavirus (i.e. from China) as medical experts had suggested, the government set up isolation camps in densely populated districts in Hong Kong.

Mei Foo residents opposed the government's unconsulted plan to transform a heritage site into a quarantine camp. In the evening of Feb 2, police violently subdued civilians, as the video captured.

Civilian arrested for going against Government's unconsulted plans for Mei Foo quarantine camp

Riot police arrested a man in Mei Foo Sun Chuen on Sunday, February 2 during a rally organised by residents to refute the government's plan to convert a heritage site into a quarantine camp nearby one of the top 5 most densely populated residential community in Hong Kong.

The man was sighted at the scene, chanting slogans. In the course of arrest, riot police deloyed pepper spray and aggressively shoved reporters aside.

Editor Note: While the appeal to revoke a court ruling which uplifted the Government's mask law is still ongoing, it has become necessary for citizens to wear face masks to protect themselves from the deadly coronavirus. Police officers have also been wearing surgical masks instead of the regular black ones while on duty.

Frustrated Elderly Urges Hong Kong Government to Seal Border with China and Answer to Public Concerns

In Mei Foo on Feb 2, an elderly woman, much frustrated, told us about her horrid experience passing through the police cordon line, when a female police officer hastened her to leave in an extremely impolite manner.

What made her even more upset was that the police yelled at her in abusive language. She considered this as a very disrespectful and offensive act by the Hong Kong police.

During the interview, the old lady took down the black wrapper around her head revealing that she was not wearing any medical mask due to the shortage across retail outlets in town.

She found that government officials of the Carrie Lam Administration only know how to run political shows, refusing to take note of public concerns, not to mention practical actions.

The elderly woman was deeply dissatisfied that instead of sealing off Hong Kong-China border to halt the spread of the coronavirus, the government set up quarantine camps in a densely populated residential area without any consultation.

During the brief interview, the riot police standing by kept on provoking the old lady and the Mei Foo residents nearby. The police yelled and shouted, asking civilians to leave the street.

Mei Foo Resident Speaks of Why They Protest against Government's Qurantine Center in Heritage Site

Kiki, a Mei Foo resident, protested against the government's unconsulted plan to set up a quarantine centre in a heritage site, which is 5 minutes walk from the neighbourhood.

As previous reports involved individuals infected with the new coronavirus escaping from quarantine centre, the close proximity with residential area might pose potential risk to elderly and children. In addition, residents would have been left unnotified, if the government plan had not been found out by the district councillors.

After all, Kiki feels that disease prevention is more effective and believes that the government should answer to the population's demand to close the border with China completely.

The government's refusal to shut down the border has sparked public discontent. Worse still, the lack of mask, the shortage of medical supplies and price inflation are among many problems ignored by the government.

Residents of Mei Foo took to the streets two days in a row over the weekend of Feb 1. They demanded the government to stop using a heritage site as a quarantine centre for suspicious cases of the novel coronavirus.

Our reporter spoke with district councillor Joshua Lee during one of the protests. He spoke about the residents’ reaction to the government’s unconsulted plan to convert the Heritage Lodge in Jiao Tsung-I Academy to a quarantine center. It should be noted that the site is less than a 10-minute walk from residential areas
