District Councillor Suspects Riot Police And Shopping Mall Management Aligned To Stop Pro-democracy Civilians From Gathering

2048 | #ShaTin
The video is an interview with Shatin District Councilor Li Chi-wen, who witnessed the whole incident of riot police storming into New Town Plaza this evening (May 1) at around 7:30pm and dispersed civilians in the shopping mall, citing the anti-gathering ban amidst the Coronavirus epidemic as an excuse.

Li accounted that the riot police occupied almost the whole atrium area of the shopping mall, and some of them went all the way to the 5th floor. At around the same time, management of the shopping mall started public announcement reminding shoppers to comply with the anti-gathering ban. Li suspected that riot police and shopping management were aligned in their action, preventing pro-democracy civilians to gather and shop there.

Some officers hurled insults at her, taunting “you are blind, you can see?” while ignoring her request for the officer’s operation call-name of the day.

[Editor's note: In the police operation in Cityplaza on Apr 26, police officers also mocked pro-democracy district councilor Andrew Chiu whose ear injury was caused in an attack alleged by a pro-Beijing supporter months ago.]

Riot Police Pushed Reporters Backwards on Escalator to "Disperse Crowds"

Yesterday (1st May) netizens called on Hongkongers to 'Shop and Sing' at Shatin's New Town Plaza Shopping Mall. A massive police force cordoned off the shopping mall and demanded shoppers leave. In addition, riot police blocked journalists from filming. As shown in the video, riot police pushed journalists backwards on the escalator, which could have caused serious injuries.

Q: What do you think about having "Sing With You” or similar activities in the future in Shatin?

A: First of all, I believe we have the right to express, in whichever format legally permitted. I don't see any reason to have the police here. If they're here to enforce regulations preventing the spread of coronavirus, why are they standing so close to each other? They aren't vigilant about epidemic prevention themselves. Again, as I have said earlier, they are using law enforcement as an excuse to exercise political suppression.

Q: Riot police came in and out the mall again and again, closing and reopening their cordon lines at least 3 to 4 times this evening. What do you think about their operation?

A: I didn't see why the riot police came in and out the shopping mall again and again. Perhaps, the officers saw people are gathering in the mall, or they saw people coming back to shop. They are creating substantial inconvenience to residents, moving police cordon lines here and there.
