CUHK Democracy Wall Plastered with Images of Suen Yat-sen and School Founder Despite Shutdown

After the Chinese University Student Union announced its disbandment on Oct 7, the school administration quickly barricaded off the student union's "Democracy Wall" in the school's Cultural Ground area.

However, the wall was made over on Double Ten Day (Oct 10). Staff and students arrived to find the wall plastered with portraits of Suen Yat-Sen, recognized in both China and Taiwan as the founding father of modern China, as well as Qian Mu, founder of New Asia College - which later became a member college of CUHK. Many passers-by stopped to take photos.

A message on the wall supporting the student union was vandalized with scribbles in simplified Chinese: "Subverting the state is a serious crime; it will ruin your future!" The message is now flanked by portraits of Suen Yat-sen, leader of the revolution.

Police and Private Security Block Access to Suen Yat-sen's Former Residence on Double Ten Day

Hong Kong had seen small-scale celebrations of "Double Ten Day" by pro-Taiwanese groups, even after the 1997 handover. At Hung Lau, Dr. Suen Yat-sen's former residence and revolutionary base, the ROC (Taiwan) flag would be flown throughout the historic site.

However, after the introduction of the National Security Law, the festivities this year had to be cancelled, as it was unclear whether celebrating it would constitute supporting Taiwan independence.

Around 20 police officers had shown up on the morning of Oct 10, with police vehicles parked outside and officers stationed on the walkway and bridge leading to the building.

As the building is private property, its owner appeared to have hired private security to stand guard inside property lines. The entire front courtyard area was barricaded off, and security officers stood guard armed with riot shields, denying access to outsiders.
