The Last Conversation: Alex Chow Reminds His Father to Close the Windows After Police Fires Tear Gas

The coroner's court inquiring the death of 22-year-old university student Alex Chow began on November 16, 2020.

On the early morning of November 4, 2019, Chow fell from Sheung Tak carpark for a reason unknown, during police operation nearby. Chow passed away at 08:09 on November 8, 2019.

Chow's father gave his testimony on the first day of the hearing. The 1997-born Alex Chow was the only child in the family. He was studying computer science at the Hong Kong University Science and Technology (#UST).

To his father's knowing, Chow "jparticipated in protests". At the night before the incident, he saw Chow carrying a backpack and filling his water bottle before leaving home. At around 00:46, Chow's father told him via Whatsapp that the police had fired tear gas. Chow replied 1 to 2 minutes later, reminding his father to close the windows. It was the last conversation between the father and the son.

When Chow's father was sleeping, Chow's secondary school friend knocked on their door, telling the family that Chow had fallen off from a building.

#Huawei Pursues UK to revisit 5G Ban As Biden Wins

Huawei vice-president Victor Zhang’s intervention comes as Boris Johnson prepares on Monday to meet the Northern Research Group, the lobby group of Conservative MPs determined to turn the prime minister’s levelling up agenda into a reality...

Critics of Huawei claim that despite the independent shareholder structure, the company can be directed at any minute by the Chinese Communist party to give its regime a backdoor to spy on British communications...//

UK's Labour Party Urges Foreign Secretary to take a 'tougher stance' on HSBC and Standard Chartered Bank

Shadow foreign secretary of Labour Party Lisa Nandy urged minister Dominic Raab to take a 'tougher stance' on HSBC and Standard Chartered Bank. She also warned banks of the 'consequences' of failing to uphold human rights.

Nandy hopes to receive "a clear statement from HSBC and Standard Chartered disassociating themselves from that national security law” in Hong Kong.

Canadians consider Beijing to be larger threat than Moscow, poll finds

Recent polling conducted for the Macdonald-Laurier Institute found 79 per cent of respondents believe China constitutes a serious or moderate threat to Canada. Sixty-eight per cent of those surveyed said Russia is a serious or moderate threat.

Shuvaloy Majumdar, a foreign-policy specialist at the Ottawa-based think tank, said the survey has captured a shift in Canadian attitudes. “China has replaced Russia as our principal rival," he said.

Chinese Scholar Calls Hong Kong Alliance a 'color revolution', 'a politically subversive organization in violation of the National Security Law'

Since Beijing imposed a national security law in Hong Kong on July 1, 2020, there has been concern whether the NGO 'Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China' ('Hong Kong Alliance'), which espouses the goal of 'end one-part dictatorship, build a democratic China', will be accused of breaching the law.

Tian Fei-long, the associate professor of the law school of Beihang University and the member of council of Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies, wrote in the Chinese state-owned newspaper Hong Kong Commercial Daily on Nov 16, 2020 that Hong Kong Alliance was 'a part of the Western color revolution and agenda of democratic globalization', and had been receiving funding from the overseas pro-democracy organizations and the foreign anti-China powers.

Tian claimed that the five operational goals of Hong Kong Alliance, namely, 'release the dissidents', 'rehabilitate the 1989 pro-democracy movement', 'demand accountability for the June 4th massacre', 'end one-party dictatorship' and 'build a democratic China', showed that Hong Kong Alliance was a 'politically subversive organization' and a Hong Kong-based 'organization of color revolution' which colluded with foreign powers in the name of 'patriotic democracy' , he then accused Hong Kong Alliance of violating the National Security Law.

[Editor's note:
Founded in Hong Kong on May 21, 1989, Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China is a NGO supporting pro-democracy movements in China.

It is also the main organizer of the annual June 4th vigil in Hong Kong's Victoria Park. Since its establishment, it has five operational goals, namely "release the dissidents", "rehabilitate the 1989 pro-democracy movement", "Demand accountability of the June 4th massacre", "end one-party dictatorship" and "build a democratic China".]

Canada will not bar entry to Hongkongers arrested for taking part in “peaceful protests,” Immigration Minister says

Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino was testifying Monday evening that Ottawa announced last week to attract young Hong Kong migrants who would be economically useful to this country. He reiterated that no one will be deemed inadmissible “if they have not committed any crime that is known to Canadian law.”

Vancouver-based immigration lawyer Richard Kurland said, “Canada is unlikely to view Hong Kong charges as being equivalent to Canadian criminal charges. The immigration and Refugee Board will bring out the rules used during the Soviet Union era to see if charges were “criminal” or “pollical”.
