Riot police use "social distancing rule" to disperse crowd; Calls Journalists "Trash, Bastards"

On 1 May, the pro-democracy Confederation of Trade Unions set up booths on the streets to encourage registration of unions. Some pro-Beijing supporters who were present chanted slogans in support of the Chinese Communist Party, such as "Well done police", and "I love Xi Jinping". They ended up quarrelling with other Hongkongers.

Police in riot gear and police in plain clothes arrived and demanded the crowds leave. Some police officers threatened reporters with pepper spray, calling them "trash", " bastards", and "clowns".

Police hurt retailer business, Pepper-sprayed reporters and Civilians in Shopping Mall

Netizens called to 'Shop and Sing' at Shatin's New Town Plaza at 19:30 on May 1 in Hong Kong. Massive police force cordonned the shopping mall at around 19:00, citing gathering ban, ordering shoppers to disperse and arbitrarily handing out fine tickets.

Many shops closed early shortly afterwards, missing a good day for more businesses to make up for the loss during the coronavirus epidemic.

At the mall, peaceful civilians held hand-made cardboards and banners with pro-democracy messages. Some called for investigating Rupert Dover, a senior police officer, who allegedly broke property rules.

A police cordon was set up far more extensive than necessary covering the entire atrium. Riot police continued their aggression when clearing out the shoppers, pepper-spraying reporters and legislators and shoving civilians through narrow corridors at the risk of stampede.

Some officers hurled insults at her, taunting “you are blind, you can see?” while ignoring her request for the officer’s operation call-name of the day.

[Editor's note: In the police operation in Cityplaza on Apr 26, police officers also mocked pro-democracy district councilor Andrew Chiu whose ear injury was caused in an attack alleged by a pro-Beijing supporter months ago.]

With Labour Day holiday (May1), the pro-democracy Confederation of Trade Unions (CTU) set up at least 66 roadside booths to encourage Hongkongers to form or join trade unions as a means to strengthen their power and push for the Five Demands.

The leadership of the CTU met with reporters outside Langham Place, Mongkok, during which platoons of riot police "happened to pass by".

Conflicts at HKCTU Street Counters

On Labour Day (1 May), citizens rallied around and supported 'Yellow Shops' (pro-democracy shops). Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (“HKCTU”) also set up around 60 street counters. Riot police were stationed everywhere and stopped pedestrians regularly.

At around 4pm, the street counter run by Lee Cheuk-yan near Langham Place was harassed by pro-China supporters. Hundreds of riot police arrived and cordoned off the entire street including the HKCTU street counter.

Several riot police officers raised their pepper spray and threatened pedestrians and reporters, shouting '1! 2! 3! 4! 5!' in reference to the prohibition of social gatherings, which bans the gathering of more than 4 people. Some riot police pushed away reporters. The pro-China supporters left while escorted by the police.
