Hong Kong Government States That Reducing Flights or Trains to Wuhan, #China Is Not Necessary at This Stage

The pneumonia outbreak in China has aroused much public's concern; eight suspected cases (including a 4-year-old girl) were recorded in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Chief Secretary for Administration Matthew Cheung Kin-chung stated that it was not necessary to reduce the frequency of flights or Express Rail Link trains to Wuhan as the government has been on high alert and would keep closely in touch with the National Health Commission for any updates.

//A Chinese girl with pneumonia has been warded in Singapore and isolated as a precautionary measure after travel to Wuhan, where there has been an outbreak of the illness...

"We are monitoring the pneumonia situation in Wuhan closely. There is no evidence of people-to-people transmission, so will likely be just a normal fever outbreak," said Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan in a Facebook post on Saturday.

"But after SARS in 2003, we cannot be complacent. In any case, it is a good occasion to remind and to exercise the public health measures."//

Police Admit Not Checking the Fingerprints on Firedoor

The inquest into Chow Tsz- lok’s death has approached a close. On the 25th day of the inquest on Jan 4, 2021, the Court has called in two Forenics Police officers, Senior Police Constable Yuen Chi-hung and Inspector Lai Chun-man.

They admitted, during the interrogation of Barrister Cheng representing the family of the deceased, that they did not pay attention to the fire door on the 3rd floor, or attempt to obtain any fingerprints on the door. They also claimed that no fingerprints were found at the scene.

When asked about the two red palm-like paints on the parapet on 3rd floor, he believed they were dried paint stains, considering their brightness and their size of almost half a palm.

The Barrister later asked if the handle of the fire door had been scanned for fingerprints, Yuen said that the handle was not attended to, so no such action was taken.

HK's Commissioner on Interception of Communications and Surveillance: Unable to oversee any covert surveillance involving the National Security Law

Hong Kong's Commissioner on Interception of Communications and Surveillance A. R. Suffiad, was asked during a briefing session on Jan 4, 2021, whether he could monitor and oversee covert surveillance in matters involving the National Security Law.

He responded that all interception of communications and surveillance are not handled by the Commissioner. He has “No Say”, and he is unable to review and oversee the investigation of the National Security Law.

The National Security Law has been implemented for more than half a year, and the implementation details of Article 43 stipulate that the police force can intercept communications and conduct covert surveillance in matters involving national security without the prior authorization of a judge.

According to the Interception of Communications and Surveillance Ordinance, prior authorization of a judge is required for such action but Article 43 has exempted issues involving national security so that only the approval of the Chief Executive is needed.

Union demands explanation after #RTHK Cancels Person of the Year poll due to vote manipulation and unusual emails

RTHK Radio programme Backchat announced on Jan 4, 2021 that the annual “Person of the year” poll was cancelled due to vote manipulation and unusual emails received.

Later in the evening, RTHK Programme Staff Union posted a statement on Facebook pointing out that it was very strange to terminate the polllast minute, and demanded Eugene Fung, Deputy Director of Broadcasting, to elaborate on what the show meant by “vote manipulation”.

In its statement, the Union questioned the management’s decision in terminating the poll. The Union quoted the results in the past to support the fact that the poll has always positioned neutrally and the results only represented the most talked about person, place, or group. “Otherwise, Pui Pui (a crocodile captured in a river in Hong Kong who now resided in the Wetland Park) would not have been chosen to be one of the Persons of the year”.

The Union also pointed out that it has always been okay to have political figures such as “Students in Umbrella Movement”, “Protestors” and “Hong Kong Police” as nominees. In the statement, a Pro-Beijing media (上綱上線) was also criticised for targeting an “ordinary radio show” and ignoring the definition of a public figure.

HK Government's New Service Might Let Journalists Be Doxed

In Hong Kong, vehicles' information used to be accessible upon application to the Transports Department. This service had been used by many journalists when conducting investigations.

In November 2020, the authorities, however, targeted RTHK journalist Bao Choy, who produced two TV documentaries on the July 21 Yuen Long mob attack, by arresting her for "giving false statements" when looking up vehicle owners' information.

Worse still, in January 2021, the Hong Kong government introduced a new service where car owners could choose to be notified if the information of their vehicle is disclosed. Once subscribed, the owner will receive an email notification containing the information of the applicant.

Former lawmaker Claudia Mo commented that the new service would expose the identity of the journalists and put them in potential danger.

CCP Revokes Human Rights Lawyers' Licence Reportedly for Helping the 12 Pro-democracy Hongkongers

Just five days after the 12 Hong Kong youths were sentenced, Lu Siwei, a Chinese human rights lawyer who assisted one of the arrestees' family had his lawyer’s licence revoked by the Sichuan Provincial Department of Justice in China.

Lu was the appointed solicitor for Quinn Moon, who was one of the twelve Hongkongers who were detained in China since August 2020. Lu recived a notice on January 4. 2021 by the Sichuan Provincial Department of Justice, stating that his licence has been revoked.

Lu issued a statement that evening saying that his lawyer’s licence was "determined to be revoked" before the case was even filed. He suspected that there is a possible abuse of power and criticized the Chinese government for “inexplicable suppression and persecution”. Lu called on the provincial government to “get back on track” and demanded a hearing.

Lu believes that the revocation of his licence was the result of his years in handling human rights cases, and that the 12 Hong Kong youths’ case was the decisive factor. Lu said that he “has no regrets” and he thanked everyone for the attention.
