Media expect President Donald Trump & Vice President Mike Pence to play "Good Cop, Bad Cop" game with China

After Vice President Mike Pence's tough speech on China policies in Oct 2018 (video HERE) at Hudson Institute, he will give a formal speech again tonight (24 Oct, HKT 11:00pm) at the Wilson Center. The speech has drawn high levels of attention from political commentators on US-China Relations.

Nikkei Asian Review expects Pence’s speech tonight will emphasize the tough stance of the Trump’s Administration on Chinese policies. It is also predicted that Pence will talk about topics that are linked to core intersts and are highly-sensitive to China, including human rights in #Tibet, #Xinjiang, #Taiwan, #HongKongProtests, #NBABoycott, and #HuaweiBan.

Bloomberg quoted from the international consultant Compass Point Research & Trading, LLC that Pence will play the role of** “Bad Cop” to criticize China’s human rights problem** and let Donald Trump to be the “Good Cop” to clear up the obstacles for the US-China Trade Deal. Director of Policy Research Isaac Boltansky wrote, “Given both the fundamentals and political realities, we expect Vice President Pence to adopt a hawkish and defensive tone.” and the “tensions between China and the United States have expanded beyond the tariff tit-for-tat in recent weeks", with the US blacklisting 8 Chinese companies, restricting granting visa to Chinese officials, and considering imposing restrictions on funds transfer of enterprises.

According to various reports, Pence had always focused on freedom, democracy, and human rights in China when compared to Trump. He had also urged the European countries to boycott Chinese telecommunications company Huawei during his visit in Sep 2019.

Chinese Officials absent IAC2019
China launched more missions to orbit than any other nation in 2018 and the trend is likely to persist. But it has missed the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) 2019. Wu Yanhua, the vice chairman of the China National Space Administration (CNSA), was not present, members were disappointed and believed Wu was unable to obtain a Visa to enter the United States. Only lower-ranking CNSA officials were attending the conference.

China’s space ambitions—including a crewed habitat in low-Earth orbit and lunar exploration—have figured as a bogeyman in the Trump administration’s domestic space rhetoric. And US national security officials believe there is an organized effort by China to steal high-tech US space hardware. Jim Bridenstine, Administrator of NASA, said the US need to be careful about theft of intellectual property. “We need to be careful about how we go about bringing new partners in that ultimately could be more harmful than helpful in future.” Vice president Mike Pence pointedly noted that space cooperation would be aimed only at “freedom-loving nations.”

Would FIFA Catch the Next Firestorm for Disregarding China's Violation of Human Rights Worldwide?

[Editor's Note: Fifa's latest move is not only controversial by disregarding China's violation of human rights and free speech worldwide; but it also means that the joint British and Irish bid would face competition from China to host the 2030 tournament.]

1. "Fifa under fire after announcing China will host 24-team Club World Cup"

//Human rights organisations have condemned Fifa’s decision to stage a revamped version of the Club World Cupin China.

World football’s governing body has confirmed that an expanded version of its showpiece event, featuring 24 teams, will take place there in June and July 2021. The decision was made despite China’s suppression of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, and the internment of more than one million Uighur Muslims in the state of Xinjiang.//

2. "China could thwart British and Irish World Cup bid"

//Those in charge of Fifa are understood to be pushing for an Asia nation — specifically China — to be allowed to bid, but that would require Fifa’s council to change its rules on tournament rotation.//

China counterpart censored video featuring Tsai Ing-wen; Taiwanese Youtuber refused to bow down

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen co-created a video with YouTuber Potter King. The video received 2.6 million views within two days. Today (15-Dec), Potter King revealed on facebook that his China counterpart requested him to remove the word ‘President’ in the video and his team refused. As a result, his partner in China changed his Weibo account password without his consent. Potter King told his China counterpart that he wished to terminate the contract. “If we cannot address our national leader as ‘President’, then we might as well not earn this money.”

China counterpart pressed to remove ‘President’
Potter King had uploaded screenshots of his Weibo messages with China New Media and said they have been interfering with the creative direction of his content. For this incident, China New Media used a condemning tone to ask Potter King to delete the video immediately because of the word ‘President’ in the video. “Today not only did they overly interfere but they also censored the word ‘President’. I discussed with Mars and the rest of the crew; we found it utterly unacceptable. It’s ridiculous.”

Weibo account of over 1 million followers hacked by China counterpart
After Potter King’s refusal to change, his Weibo password was changed without his permission and he could no longer log in. Then his China counterpart requested to terminate the contract. Potter King replied, “Go ahead.” He stated: “If we cannot address our national leader as ‘President’, then this money is not worth it. Even though that means a considerable loss in our monthly income, but we really don’t want to bow down.”

Yesterday (14-Dec) Potter King released a video showing Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen visiting his studio. He kept his usual cheeky style and teased Tsai Ing-wen several times in the video. The video had already received 2.6million views on facebook.

Yifang Fruit Tea’s support of one country, two systems has become the nail in the coffin. Taiwan Yifang closes down nearly 30 branches

Taiwan franchised tea shop, Yifang Fruit Tea was affected by the Hong Kong anti-extradition law demonstration in August this year. At that time, the Yifang Hong Kong Central store posted a notice outside the door saying “to walk alongside Hong Kongers, no service for one day”. This action upset Chinese internet users who posted angry messages to attack Yifang’s Chinese branches. Taiwan’s Yifang then stated its official Weibo: “Resolutely uphold one country, two systems, and resolutely oppose violent strikes!” However, the statement triggered Taiwanese consumers to boycott the brand. Since the incident, nearly 30 branches have closed in Taiwan, accounting for about a sixth of the total number of branches there. Many franchisees went bankrupt as a result. On December 2, the Yifang Fruit Tea Yunlin Huwei Zhongzheng store closed down. A heated discussion was caused when the owner bowed 90 degrees to thank customers for their support.

Ko Tzu-kai, founder of Yifang, was recently interviewed and bluntly said that he could not think of a better solution for this incident: “No owner can bear the risk of losing 40 to 60% of his revenue, but he will not give up the Taiwan market.” He discreetly established a new brand “Shuangjiang Tea”. Ko said that the regional general manager in China, who oversaw more than 1,000 stores at the time, was very anxious. In desperation, Ko allowed the regional manager to issue two statements to control the damage: “Resolutely uphold one country, two systems, and resolutely oppose violent strikes” and “Never tolerate any acts intended to split the country”.

After the Yifang incident, twelve other Taiwanese bubble tea brands including 50 Lan, Jenjudan, Meet Fresh, Tiger Sugar, The Alley, 85 Degree, Chatime, Milkshop, CoCo, Gong Cha, DaYungs and OneZo Tapioca have issued statements on Weibo of support: “One Country, Two Systems”, “1992 Consensus”, “People on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are all of one family.”, “Chinese pride”. Taiwanese people regarded these and other statements as “kneeling to the Chinese market” and called the incident “the chaos of bubble tea shops”. In response to this phenomenon, blogger Jinmurmur pointed out on Facebook that the tea shop opinion war is all about Taiwanese businesses wanting to please both sides simultaneously. She bluntly stated that the reason Yifang was desperate to make that statement is not for consumers, but for the Communist Party, “They are afraid of being resisted by more than one billion people in mainland China.”

Jinmurmur, who was born in mainland China, said, “If your heart is not with the Communist Party, your business in China will be hindered; if your heart is with the Party, then prepare to be hated by others; if a business sits on the fence, it will suffer the most.” She said that she would not sympathize with Taiwanese businesses who try to please the Chinese government. “You are the ones making all the money. Why would you want my sympathy? . . . Was the party forcing them? It’s the Taiwanese businesses that got themselves in this mess! If they want to step into the market despite differing viewpoints from China, these brands should assess the risk before making a decision. “

Police end rally, enter Chater Garden and shoot at unarmed crowd

On January 19, riot police and raptor squads entered Chater Garden and dispersed those attending the “Rally for Global Sanctions Against Communist China,” after the rally was ended prematurely. However, because of the large size of the crowd attending the rally, many were trapped inside Chater Garden.

Some members of raptor squads fired pepper-spray pellets at those trapped inside the park, even though the attendees at the rally had not taken any actions against police. Police also used pepper spray on reporters who were filming at the scene.

Riot police lock up young man in public toilet for search and bar press from filming

At around 6pm on January 19, riot police barged into a public toilet in Chater Garden to intercept and search a young man.

During the search, police officers locked the toilet door to prevent reporters from entering the toilet to film the process.
Since no one can see what had happened inside the toilet, anxious bystanders shouted, “are you trying to kill him?”

The young man was searched and interrogated for around half an hour before taken away.

Tencent-funded 'Top Gun' Cuts Taiwan and Japan flags from Tom Cruise's Jacket

"Top Gun: Maverick" released its movie trailer last year. However, sharp-eyed fans from around the world noticed some changes to Tom Cruise's character, other than age catching up with the character.

The old jacket that the main character, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell wore in the original 80s classic had the Taiwanese and Japanese country flag patches on it. However, in the new one as seen in the trailer, those flags have been replaced by two symbols with similar color schemes.

According to journalist Mark MacKinnnon, a Senior International Correspondent for Canada's The Globe and Mail, he mentioned that there was a new Top Gun movie coming out, and that Maverick was wearing the same leather jacket, just that this time, with the Taiwanese and Japanese flags removed, it is approved by the Chinese Communist Party.

We are seeing a stark increase in Hollywood movies bowing down to 'Chinese sensitivities'. While filmmakers are often found defending such actions, using the Chinese box office as an excuse, we know that this is a clear example of the Chinese Communist Party's influence in the West. Companies such as Tencent will be earning direct from a cut of the profits made out of it.

Actions speak louder than words. If we talk about boycotting Chinese products and Chinese companies, then we should also start boycotting such movies as well.
