#SheungShui | Netizens launched the “Shop with You” activity in Sheung Shui Plaza. Some people went to Metropolis Plaza before returning to Sheung Shui Plaza and beat the gate of a closed personal care store. It was suspected that some people were arguing with plainclothes police on the 4th floor, with the two sides pushing each other. A person used a retractable baton and pepper spray and subdued many people. A group of riot police later arrived at the scene. A number of people were seen subdued and sitting on the floor and facing the wall.

Meanwhile, someone shouted at passers-by and told them to go back to Mainland China. The riot police subdued at least one person and handcuffed him.

Editor's Note:
Parallel trading in Hong Kong is the phenomenon of China parallel traders taking advantage of the multiple visa policy in Hong Kong to import goods from Hong Kong to Mainland China. As parallel traders have always targeted household goods for importation, this caused shortages of said goods in various locations in the New Territories, most notably those near the border between Hong Kong Kong and Mainland China.

This phenomenon arose as products in Hong Kong are generally percieved as of higher quality than those in Mainland China; while the strength of Renmingbi (RMB) against the Hong Kong Dollar and the absence of taxes and duties in Hong Kong made it commercially viable to conduct such trading.

Needless to say, the constant shortage of household goods near the border, the inflation caused by such trade, small shop catered for local needs closing down, and the social disturbance caused by traders entering local communities caused great dislike of the said activities in Hong Kong, and is a strong driver of the conflicts between Hong Kong and Mainland China.
