There are places on the Moon that have not seen sunlight for billions of years.

Deep inside some craters near the Moonโ€™s poles, the Sun never rises high enough to reach the crater floors. These permanently shadowed regions remain in darkness and can be cold enough to preserve water ice for extremely long periods.

Scientists have found evidence of water ice in these dark lunar craters, making them some of the most unusual places in our solar system. ๐ŸŒ‘

In 1936, Britainโ€™s King Edward VIII became the first British monarch to voluntarily abdicate the throne. He wanted to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcรฉe whose previous marriages made the relationship unacceptable to the British government and Church of England at the time. Edward abdicated on 11 December 1936, less than a year after becoming king. His younger brother, George VI, then became king, while Edward and Simpson later married in France.

Beneath the streets of Paris lies a vast network of former limestone quarries that was transformed into the Paris Catacombs in the late 18th century. In 1786, bones from overflowing Parisian cemeteries began to be transferred into the tunnels. Today, the officially accessible section contains the remains of several million people, arranged along the underground galleries in carefully stacked walls of bones and skulls.

Postpartum depression is a common but serious mood disorder that can begin anytime within the first year after childbirth.

Postpartum depression affects many new parents, but postpartum psychosis is a much rarer and more severe condition, affecting roughly 1โ€“2 people per 1,000 births. It can involve hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, severe confusion, and rapid changes in mood or behavior, and is considered a psychiatric emergency.

The condition became widely discussed after Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother, was accused of killing her three children on 24 January 2023. Her defense argues that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder at the time.

The Etruscans were an influential civilization that flourished in central Italy, particularly in modern-day Tuscany, from around the 9th century BC. They built wealthy city-states, developed sophisticated metalworking and trade networks, and influenced early Roman culture, religion, architecture, and political traditions. Their language, Etruscan, was written in an alphabet derived from Greek, but most surviving texts are short inscriptions. By the 1st century AD, the language had largely disappeared as Rome absorbed Etruscan territory and culture.

In 1859, a massive solar storm known as the Carrington Event struck Earth. Telegraph systems across Europe and North America malfunctioned, with some operators receiving electric shocks and telegraph paper catching fire. Auroras were seen as far south as the Caribbean. It remains the most powerful geomagnetic storm recorded in history, and scientists believe a similar event today could severely disrupt satellites, GPS, and power grids worldwide.

In German, there is a word for the strange feeling of being embarrassed on someone else's behalf: Fremdschรคmen.

It combines fremd (โ€œforeignโ€ or โ€œsomeone else'sโ€) with schรคmen (โ€œto be ashamedโ€). You might feel Fremdschรคmen while watching someone confidently make a painfully awkward mistake in publicโ€”even though you aren't involved at all.

In China, a street food called suodiu uses small stones stir-fried with spices. People suck the flavor off the stones and then spit them out. The stones are not meant to be eaten. The name *suodiu* means โ€œsuck and dispose.โ€

In Japan, people who turn 20 traditionally celebrate Seijin no Hi, or Coming of Age Day. The national holiday is held on the second Monday of January, and ceremonies are organized by local governments for young adults.

Women often wear elaborate furisode kimono, while men may wear suits or traditional clothing.

The celebration marks the transition into adulthood and has traditionally been associated with responsibilities such as voting and legal adulthood, although Japan lowered the legal age of adulthood from 20 to 18 in 2022.

Crows can recognize human faces and remember people they associate with danger. In experiments, researchers wore different masks while capturing crows. The birds later reacted more strongly to the mask associated with being captured, even when it was worn by a different person. Some studies found that this recognition could persist for years, allowing crows to distinguish between familiar and threatening human faces.

Alexander Selkirk asked to be left on Mรกs a Tierra island on 1 September 1704 because he believed the ship was unsafe. He survived alone there for about four years.

The ship later sank due to poor condition, and many crew members died or were lost, though some survived. Selkirk was rescued on 2 February 1709 and returned home. His story inspired the famous novel Robinson Crusoe.

Operation Paperclip was a secret U.S. program after World War II. It brought over 1,500 German and Austrian scientists to the United States. Many had been members of the Nazi Party. They worked on military, aeronautics, and space research. Their Nazi pasts were ignored so the U.S. could use their expertise and keep it from the Soviet Union.

The Greek god Hermes influenced the name of a modern scientific field: hermeneutics, the study of interpretation, especially the interpretation of texts.

Hermes was the messenger of the gods. The connection passed through the Greek word hermฤ“neuein, meaning โ€œto interpret,โ€ which was traditionally associated with Hermes.

The Great Fire of London started on September 2, 1666, in a bakery on Pudding Lane. It burned for four days, destroying over 13,500 homes and leaving more than 80,000 people homeless. Only about 6 people died. The fire changed the cityโ€™s buildings and streets forever.
