A quipu (khipu) was a knottedβcord system used by the Inca and other Andean peoples to record numbers, dates and accounts without alphabetic writing. Using colored strings and different knot types, quipu encoded precise numerical data and may also have represented narrative or mnemonic information. They are not used as a formal recordβkeeping system today, though some cultural knowledge and use of knotted cords persists locally and researchers continue to study them.
