Many of them are lying to themselves…the politicians, take our own beloved Starmer, know absolutely nothing of military affairs, virtually nothing of international affairs, certainly nothing of Russia. And so they believe whatever the generals and admirals tell them.

There is this belief that Europe needs to increase its defences, especially with America now looking more and more unreliable.

But how do you persuade electorates to accept much higher military spending when every budget in Europe is under intense pressure and the economies are stagnant?

It seems a lot of people think the only way is to terrify the public, to convince them that the Russian bear is coming to eat their children.

But I’m not sure this is really working. There is a sense among Western European publics that this is vastly exaggerated.’

‘Trump has come to power and that has left the Europeans in a very uncomfortable position. They have committed themselves, in theory, verbally, completely to Ukraine.

But of course, when they did that, it was in the conviction that they had the complete support of the United States. Now they no longer do.

Now, of course, under Trump, the US is basically telling them that, over time, but possibly not a very long time, they will have to take the chief responsibility for their own defence and for paying for their own defence, which they have, once again verbally agreed to.

But of course, every budget in Europe is under intense pressure, from the effort to maintain social services amidst economic stagnation. And where the money is going to come from, where the money is going to come from for Ukraine if this war goes on for another year, is very unclear.

But they seem to have trapped themselves, through their language in a situation where they cannot now back down and seek a genuine compromise peace.’

A reminder that the US🇺🇸 is punishing Cuba🇨🇺 for regaining its sovereignty and developed successfully outside of Washington-imposed capitalism:

Before the Cuban revolution, US financial interests owned:

90% of Cuba’s mines

80% of public utilities

50% of railways

40% of sugar production

25% of bank deposits

In the first 30 months after Fidel Castro and Cuba’s communists came to power, more classrooms were built in those 30 months than had been built in the previous 30 years.

Within the first six months of Castro's government, 600 miles of road had been built across the island, while $300 million was spent on water and sanitation schemes.

Over 800 houses were constructed every month in the early years of the administration in a measure to cut homelessness, while nurseries and day-care centers were opened for children and other centers opened for the disabled and elderly.

With the arrival of the revolutionary government, Cuban healthcare was nationalised and expanded with heavy investment, bringing free healthcare access to millions.

Universal vaccination for childhood diseases was introduced, leading to infant mortality rates plummeting. Cuba's 'army of doctors' is now sent to crisis-hit countries around the world.

Since 1963, more than 600,000 Cuban health workers have provided medical services in more than 160 countries.

Despite being under the illegal embargo imposed by the US, Cuba now has a higher life expectancy than the US, has more doctors per capita than the US, and is among the top 35 countries for lowest child mortality rates. Under Fidel Castro's rule, UNICEF declared severe child malnutrition to be eradicated.

In just 2024-2025 alone, the US embargo on Cuba caused over $7.5 billion in economic losses.
