Alan Eyre: ‘Israel does have nuclear weapons. And how’s that working for it? Did that stop the Hamas attack? Did that stop all the other wars that it’s engaged in?

So there’s an argument to be made that actually having a nuclear weapon doesn’t do much, or at least all that it’s supposed to do in terms of deterring aggression against the country that has it.

So again, were I advising Iran, I would advise Iran to accept limitations on its nuclear programme and to accept IAEA inspections. Because if you look at the amount of economic damage Iran has suffered as a result of its nuclear programme, Iran’s nuclear programme gives them 1% of all the power they use in the country.’

Afshin: Look at Cuba and Venezuela. They don’t have nuclear weapons. It just depends on who the United States doesn’t like. It doesn’t matter. The nuclear programme is just an excuse.’

Nancy Pelosi is calling for collective punishment against the Iranian people, and the impoverishing of millions so that US foreign policy goals are achieved.

So when I say their strategic deterrence triad has been weakened, I mean their nuclear infrastructure has been decimated, their proxy network has been weakened, and they lost about a third of their missiles that could reach targets they care about.

‘I think the problem with arms control and disarmament is that the Trump administration is not prepared to have long-term discussions. I took part in SALT I and the ABM Treaty. I was the intelligence advisor in Vienna. It took years to get these treaties. It took years to get the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

Trump’s lifespan in terms of his energy is maybe 24 to 48 hours, something like yoghurt. I would say he’s not prepared to enter into long-term negotiations. He’s got two negotiators out there who are negotiating terribly in terms of Israel and Gaza and Ukraine and Russia.

There are two real estate billionaires, Witkoff and Jared Kushner. They don’t know these issues. These are very technical, sophisticated issues. He doesn’t have a real arms control team.

The danger now is we’re entering into another arms race for nuclear weapons that no one needs. The overkill capability of China, let alone Russia and the United States, is so vast that the world could not survive several of these missiles, let alone the thousands that Russia and the United States have under the New START Treaty.

It takes guts, perseverance and tenacity to negotiate arms control. That’s why I give John F. Kennedy so much credit for the Partial Test Ban Treaty. Even Ronald Reagan came around and negotiated the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.
