On this day in 1939, Barcelona fell to the fascist forces of Francisco Franco, marking not just a military defeat, but the violent destruction of working-class power in Spain. What followed was class war from above enforced by Franco’s fascists.
Between 1939 and 1945, an estimated 130,000–150,000 people were imprisoned in Catalonia. Barcelona was turned into a vast carceral zone: prisons, factories, schools, and bullrings were filled with workers, communists, trade unionists, and Republican fighters.
At least 3500 executions took place in Catalonia after the war. Across Spain, over 50,000 people were executed under Franco’s ‘peace’, many after summary military tribunals lasting minutes, in an episode of counter-revolutionary fascist terror.
More than 500,000 people fled into exile, disproportionately from working-class and left-wing strongholds like Barcelona. Those who remained faced forced labour battalions, confiscation of property, blacklisting, and political purges. Tens of thousands were stripped of their jobs and civil rights.
The Catalan language was banned from education, administration, courts, and public life. Workers’ institutions were dismantled. Unions were outlawed. Parties representing the working class were exterminated.
Barcelona, a vibrant, revolutionary city that had seen collectivised industry, workers’ militias, and popular power, was deliberately silenced so that landlords, generals and foreign capital could rule without resistance.
Catalan resistance had been heroic and legendary. In 1936, the working class of Barcelona resisted a fascist coup with grassroots organisation and fought valiantly, despite the Catalonia region being under constant bombing, and the scourge of hunger being ever-present. This resistance would hold out until 1939.
However, their fate was tragic. Anarchist militias, POUM forces, Republicans, and Communists often acted without unified command. Revolutionary enthusiasm replaced centralised military discipline, a key weakness against Franco’s fascist forces which were under a centralised command as a professional army.
Decentralised working class resistance could not fight effectively against this.
With revolutionary romanticism instead of revolutionary discipline, unity, and a state capable of crushing fascism, they were ultimately defeated by Franco’s fascists. What followed for the working classes of the revolutionary city was horrific repression, and domination by capital.

In Nazi-occupied France, an SS officer saw a photo of Picasso’s Guernica painting, which depicted the horrific devastation and death caused by the Nazi bombing of the Spanish town Guernica in 1937.
The officer asked Picasso, “Did you do that?”
Picasso replied, “No, you did.”

Could Iran🇮🇷 shut down the Strait of Hormuz if the US🇺🇸 and Israel attack?
‘What we worry about in the Middle East is the wider conflict or the reignition of the war between Israel and Iran, which would bring into question the role of the Strait of Hormuz, through which one third of all gas and one third of all oil used in the world goes through.
So if there would be a major crisis or war between Israel and Iran, the Strait of Hormuz could be closed, and we would have an energy crisis of epic proportions.
If push would come to shove, I’m sure they would do it. It would hurt them also. But if the very existence of Iranian leadership, or Iran as a state, would come into question, I’m sure they would do it.
But I think that President Trump does not want to go there. So there is a backstop here, I think, in the US.’

The daily humiliation of Europe continues, and Europe’s leaders remain unimaginative to pursue strategic diversification and committed to the transatlantic master-slave relationship.

"It is the heart of US policy to use fascism to preserve capitalism while claiming to be saving democracy from communism."
-Michael Parenti (1933-2026)
The US backed Franco’s fascist regime in Spain, signing agreements for Spain to host US air and naval bases, proving that so-called ‘liberal democracies’ would ally with fascism if it meant protecting capitalism.
While Franco brutally repressed the working classes of Spain in the name of anti-communism, the US aided his regime by facilitating Western investment, rehabilitating the Franco regime diplomatically, and providing military aid.
This blueprint of supporting or even installing fascism to protect capitalist interests was then rolled out across Latin America, with the US supporting and installing fascist dictatorships to crush the working classes of the region, such as:
Augusto Pinochet🇨🇱
Jorge Rafael Videla🇦🇷

On this day in 1944, the Nazi Siege of Leningrad was finally lifted by the defenders of the Red Army.
The Siege of Leningrad was one of the longest, brutal & destructive sieges in history. It would last for 2 years, 4 months, 2 weeks & 5 days. The goal was not to occupy the city, but to starve it into extinction.
By early 1942, an estimated 100,000 people were dying in Leningrad a month, mostly from starvation. Due to the desperation, at the worst point of the siege, workers only received 250 grams of bread a day, their dependents only received 125 grams.
In total desperation, people boiled wallpaper paste for starch, chewed their leather belts, and even scraped glue from furniture to eat.
The harsh cold of the Russian winter was faced with no electricity, no heat, and no fuel, with Leningrad’s citizens freezing to death in -30 degrees Celsius.
Up to 1.5 million Red Army soldiers & civilians died in the siege in a heroic sacrifice to ensure that the city does not fall to the Nazis.
Adolf Hitler wanted to wipe out the city bearing Vladimir Lenin’s name, and exterminate the population who he viewed as sub-human. The resilience of the people of Leningrad defeated Hitler’s hatred.

On this day in 1945, Joseph Stalin’s Red Army liberates the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps in which millions of Jews were killed.
Soviet troops found 370,000 men's suits, 837,000 articles of women's clothing, and 7 tonnes of human hair.
Soviet troops gave their lives to liberate the concentration camps that served as industrial-scale human slaughterhouses…and yet Russia has not been invited to the 80th Auschwitz liberation anniversary memorial event in Poland, while the country that perpetrated the atrocities, Germany, will be there.
No matter how much the US, UK, and EU try to rewrite history, the statistics reveal the truth. 27 million Soviets died to defeat fascism in World War 2, the greatest sacrifice of any country during the war. Roughly 3 in 4 German soldiers killed in World War 2 died fighting the Red Army on the Eastern Front.
Without the Red Army, Auschwitz would not have been liberated, and Europe would be under the fascist tyranny of Germany.

‘But who ended the Holocaust?’
‘The Soviet Union, actually.’
As the world remembers the liberation of Auschwitz 80 years ago, a reminder of a classic case of historical fact vs the rewriting of history.
In US and European media, the US is presented as the liberator of Europe that ended the Holocaust and Nazi Germany’s crimes. In reality it was the Soviet Red Army that liberated the concentration camps, giving 27 million lives to defeat German fascism, with 3 in every 4 German soldiers that died in WW2 being killed on the Eastern Front.

A massive congratulations to the European Union for sanctioning itself and increasing its own energy prices.
Instead of importing cheap Russian gas which was the backbone of its industry, now they can increase their dependence on MORE EXPENSIVE US LNG!
US LNG made up approximately 27-29% of the EU’s total energy imports in 2025.
While the EU deindustrialises and industry moves to the US, the US profits by selling Europe the rope it economically hangs itself with.
A masterclass of geopolitics and economics once again by the European circus.

Out of a pre-war population of 3.2 million people, 1 million civilians died during the Siege. That’s almost 1 in 3 people.
This doesn’t even count Red Army losses.
The scale of horror Germany committed against the Soviet Union is omitted from school textbooks in NATO nations.
