On 15/08/1939, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin proposed an anti-Nazi pact with France and the UK, offering to send 1 million Soviet troops to the German border to deter German expansion and stop the outbreak of World War 2, after years of appeasement by Western Europe and deals made with the Nazis.

The proposal was ignored and 2 weeks later, World War 2 began.

The moment Joseph Stalin received the news that Nazi Germany had launched Operation Barbarossa and invaded the Soviet Union

In the initial panic and horror, Stalin reportedly exclaimed “Everything is lost. I give up. Lenin founded our state and we’ve f****d it up.”

After a few days of panic and disorientation, Stalin returned to the Kremlin to organise the Soviet war effort. The Nazi hordes had reached deep into the heartlands of the USSR and were advancing on Moscow

Stalin ordered scorched earth tactics, destroying infrastructure and any supplies that could aid the Waffen SS and Wehrmacht as they advanced, a key decision which left the Nazis vulnerable as their supply lines became longer and longer as they advanced

The policy was harsh and painful, but played a large part in grinding down the Nazis rapid advance and prevented them from capturing Moscow in the winter of 1941

The Soviet High Command was reorganised, with the most competent Generals brought into the leadership such as the legendary George Zhukov.

Nearly 16 million Soviet citizens were evacuated and 1500 large factories were moved to the eastern heartland of the USSR. Stalin refused to leave Moscow, understanding that Soviet morale would be boosted if he stayed in the capital and fought on within the range of German bombers

While Stalin had made a massive mistake of ignoring the reports that Nazi Germany’s invasion was imminent, the decisions made after the initial panic and paralysis saved the Soviet Union from complete destruction and capitulation, and were crucial in setting the foundation for the Soviet Union’s stunning comeback

Much is made of the 1939 Nazi-Soviet pact, which was only signed after the Soviet leadership’s outreaches to the leaders of Western Europe to create an anti-Nazi alliance to contain Germany were ignored.

The USSR only agreed to signing the pact to avoid a full-scale war against Germany because the Soviet Armed Forces was not viewed as ready for a war against Germany at the time.

Here are a list of pacts made by the UK, France, Poland, and others with the Nazis than are conveniently ignored in UK-US-EU media coverage and history textbooks.

THE FEMALE SOVIET SNIPER FEARED BY THE NAZIS

Lyudmila Pavlichenko, a Soviet sniper born in the Ukrainian SSR, serving in the Red Army during WW2 is confirmed to have killed 309 Nazis. Her actual number of confirmed kills is likely to be far higher as a confirmed kill must be witnessed by a third party. She served during the Siege of Odessa and Siege of Sevastopol before being injured by a mortar shell and being evacuated to Moscow.

Her confirmed kill count makes her the deadliest female sniper of all time and ranks her in the top 5 snipers of all time. She was given the ‘Hero of the Soviet Union’, the highest honour one could receive in the USSR.

VICTORY DAY: THE BATTLE OF STALINGRAD TURNED THE TIDE OF THE WAR

After Nazi Germany’s leader Adolf Hitler obsessed over seizing the city to deal a humiliating blow to Premier of the Soviet Union ☭ Joseph Stalin, by taking the city named after him. Hitler had promoted Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus thinking that he would not surrender to the Red Army. After the legendary fightback by Red Army soldiers in one of the most brutal theatres of urban combat in human history, German 6th Army troops had finally been encircled after the success of Operation Uranus.

1.1 million Soviet soldiers either died, were wounded or went missing defending the city from the Nazi hordes and totally wiped out the German 6th Army. This would mark the first major battlefield defeat of the previously unbeatable Waffen SS and Wehrmacht, and would turn the tide of the war in the Soviet Union’s favour. 11 million Soviet soldiers died in WW2 and three-quarters of German losses were suffered at the hands of the Red Army. 27 million Soviet citizens died in the fight to destroy Nazism.
