'The bombing of Yugoslavia in 1997 wasn't authorised by the United Nations, it was a NATO operation, and it gives the lie to the idea that NATO is a purely defensive organisation. I think if you're also trying to work out what the Russian attitude has been, ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union, there's been a consistent opposition to the eastward expansion of NATO. That's running consistently from Gorbachev, Yeltsin, to Putin.'

'That's always been met by the argument that NATO is a purely defensive organisation, that there's nothing to fear. And this idea that NATO is a sort of encircling beast is something conjured up by the Russians...so you have that narrative. The other case you can raise is the operation in Iraq.'

'The word shambles is right. The whole of our policy was based on a lie, which is that we'd come to the aid of Ukraine whatever it took. And the point is that we were never prepared to come to the help of Ukraine, whatever it took. That is to give enough support to Ukraine for them to achieve a victory over Russia. So there was always that element of deception there.'

'Gradually, it became more palpable that Ukraine wasn't actually doing so well in the war from 2024 onward. So this idea that we were going to do whatever it took to achieve a Ukrainian victory not only became more and more false but also more and more immoral because we were actually encouraging the fighting to go on rather than seeking some way of ending it. All that was changed with the victory of Donald Trump, which left the UK and the European allies without a plausible policy.'

The 'unprovoked full-scale aggression' of Russia against Ukraine. Those terms are all linked together and they're just repeated as a mantra and journalists don't have any other vocabulary...'

🇪🇺🇺🇦🇷🇺Macron says European countries don’t need Russia’s permission to deploy troops in Ukraine to enforce a peace deal.

Russia has made it explicitly clear that NATO nation troops in Ukraine means direct conflict with Russia, in other words World War 3.

While Washington and Moscow negotiate based on respect of each other’s core interests, the circus in Europe is only interested in performing dangerous antics that risk WW3 in order to try and stay relevant, as it faces isolation from Washington, Moscow, and Beijing.

‘Trump shredded the script, he shredded the narrative on which our public life has been based in this particular area for the last three years and the problem for Sir Keir Starmer and to a lesser extent other nations, is how to insert themselves into the new script. Various things they’ve tried to do have been non-starters.’

‘One is to get a coalition of the willing, that is Britain, France and maybe one or two another nations to police the ceasefire and therefore get into Ukraine. That was never going to work. Russia was never going to accept. They said it because it was a way of trying to make themselves relevant to a process from which they are being excluded.’

Lord Skidelsky said the British🇬🇧 and European plan to deploy troops to Ukraine🇺🇦 is a non-starter and just an attempt to make themselves relevant to a process from which they are being excluded.

Here’s an example of the exclusion: Donald Trump says the issue of dividing territory and assets is being discussed to end the Russia🇷🇺-NATO proxy war in Ukraine.

While Washington deals with the core points of contention in the peace negotiations, which are no NATO membership for Ukraine and ceding territory…France, the UK, and other European countries loudly announce non-starter nonsense like deploying troops to Ukraine, which Russia has said would mean direct conflict.

Washington and Moscow will continue to ignore Europe, and Europe will be isolated with its geopolitical circus.

‘At the moment, the UK’s and Europe’s leaders are trapped by their so-called fiscal rules…so defence breaks these fiscal rules. What’s going on is something I think we would recognise as Military Keynesianism. You can’t justify large state expenditures for welfare or things of this kind. You have to cut those because we can’t afford it.’

‘But as soon as you raise the question of national security, everything becomes affordable and that’s what’s happening now…the Germans are breaking their fiscal rules in order to boost their defence. The British will be breaking their fiscal rules in order to get more money for defence. And the justification for everything is Ukraine.’
