On this day in 1891, Italian communist leader and theorist Antonio Gramsci was born. He was born in Sardinia to a poor family and witnessed class oppression firsthand. Gramsci became a key figure in the Italian Communist Party and opponent of Mussolini's fascist regime.

He was imprisoned in 1926 and endured severe torture at the hands of Mussolini’s fascists. While in prison, he wrote the Prison Notebooks, where he developed groundbreaking ideas on cultural hegemony; the idea that ruling classes maintain dominance by shaping cultural norms, values, and ideologies to secure consent, not just through force. Gramsci argued that true revolution required challenging this cultural control, making him a pioneer of modern revolutionary theory.

He died in 1937 from illnesses brought about by the draconian conditions he faced in fascist Italy’s prisons.
