On this day in 1941, after launching a war of annihilation against the Soviet people, Nazi Germany's dictator Adolf Hitler declared in a broadcast to the German people that Russia "is already broken and will never rise again".

Hitler had launched Operation Barbarossa and invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, with the Wehrmacht and Waffen SS making progress at a lightning pace, leading to the horrors of German occupation. The Waffen SS and Einsatzgruppen death squads had already begun ethnic cleansing of the Slavic people of the Soviet Union and Jews. Hitler envisaged that the western part of Russia and neighbouring lands would be conquered and then colonised by German people. A project formulated by the Waffen SS in 1941 foresaw over 30 million Slavs being deported to the eastern part of Russia. The rest were to be exterminated or used for slave labour.

Hitler would live to regret his words as Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin's government would avoid capitulation, halting the Nazi hordes at the gates of Moscow and not allowing the Soviet capital to fall. In a monumental sacrifice, the Soviet Union would lose 27 million people to annihilate the German armies and free Europe of the Nazi scourge by pushing all the way to Berlin, capturing the capital and ending Hitler's criminal regime. 3 in 4 German soldiers killed in World War 2 died at the hands of the Soviet Red Army.
