On this day in 1903, Belgium’s🇧🇪 King Leopold II denies Belgian atrocities in Congo in attempt to cover up his genocidal crimes.

10 million Congolese Africans were killed due to violent punishment, starvation, disease, and overwork, while King Leopold II ruled the ‘Congo Free State’. His regime was marked by extreme violence and exploitation, driven by the extraction of rubber, ivory, and other resources. Some of his crimes include:

Forced Labour: Indigenous Congolese were coerced into harvesting rubber and gathering resources under brutal conditions, often with their families held hostage.

Widespread Mutilation: Workers who did not meet quotas or resisted were often punished by having their hands, feet, or other body parts cut off.

Destruction of Communities: Villages were destroyed, people were displaced/enslaved to facilitate resource extraction.

Economic Pillage: Leopold amassed vast personal wealth by exploiting Congo’s resources, with little benefit to the Congolese.
