On this day in 1955, American investigative journalist Gary Webb was born.

In 1996, he exposed how the CIA hired drug traffickers to sell massive amounts of crack cocaine in the US to fund the Contra death squads in Nicaragua, who were engaged in CIA-backed regime change operations against the Sandinista revolutionaries.

The crack cocaine epidemic disproportionately ravaged African-American communities, the lives of many families ruined for the pursuit of US imperial interests.

Gary Webb was smeared by the mainstream media and vilified. In 2004 he was found with 2 bullet wounds in his head, and his death was swiftly ruled a suicide. Many suspect he was murdered for exposing the crimes of the CIA.
