On this day in 2007, US forces carry out some of the most infamous atrocities in their illegal occupation of Iraq. Julian Assange’s Wikileaks would later release the footage of it to the public, which they would title ‘Collateral Murder’.

The footage shows Reuters journalists, Saeed Chmagh and Namir Noor-Eldeen being gunned down by a US Apache helicopter. Several other civilians were killed while the US pilots laughed.

The release footage sparked intense anger and backlash against the USA all around the world, exposing their campaign in Iraq as nothing but colonial barbarism. This would be one of the reasons the US began persecuting Julian Assange for over a decade.

On this day in 1916, legendary Soviet Ukrainian sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko was born. She served in the Red Army during WW2 is confirmed to have killed 309 Nazis. Her actual number of confirmed kills is likely to be far higher as a confirmed kill must be witnessed by a third party. She served during the Siege of Odessa and Siege of Sevastopol before being injured by a mortar shell and being evacuated to Moscow.

Her confirmed kill count makes her the deadliest female sniper of all time and ranks her in the top 5 snipers of all time. She was given the ‘Hero of the Soviet Union’, the highest honour one could receive in the USSR.

Today, Ukraine glorifies Nazi collaborators such as Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukhevych. Here is an actual Ukrainian hero worth remembering.
