After originally aiding Saddam Hussein’s brutal rise to power and providing him with weapons and support against Iran, he had outlived his usefulness, leading to the illegal US-led invasion of Iraq🇮🇶 based on lies about Saddam Hussein possessing WMDs and being allied with Al-Qaeda.

The war resulted in 1 million Iraqis killed in the invasion and subsequent bloodshed that lasted for years, giving birth to the rise of ISIS. On this day in 2002, Hugo Chavez is overthrown in a US-backed coup, bringing in a right-wing coup regime that rescinded many of the reforms Hugo Chavez introduced which benefitted millions of poor Venezuelans, including the 1999 constitution which was approved by popular referendum.

The coup regime would be short-lived, as loyalists in the Venezuelan military worked to return Chavez to power.
