An Afghan military source and a 🇺🇸 US official told the publication that the first deals were with minor government officials in the villages.

Officially, this was formalized as a ceasefire agreement, but in reality, the Taliban paid money for the weapons of government troops.

Within a year, these agreements were transferred to the level of districts, and then the provincial capitals of Afghanistan. As a result, in the summer of 2021, entire provinces surrendered to the Taliban without a fight.
