Muqaddam (Major) Abdulrahman Milad, also known as "Al-Bidja," a Libyan naval officer who acted as the Commander of the Naval Academy in Libya and the second-in-command of the Coast Guard was killed by gunmen on Sunday evening as he left the academy in Sayyad, west of Tripoli.
Milad is said to have made a fortune exploiting desperate migrants hoping to reach Italy despite being a senior commander in the coast guard.
Bijda has been named and sanctioned in a 2013 & 2018 UN report for involvement in human trafficking and human rights abuses and was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury in the same year for his alleged human rights voilations.
Bidja was also known in Libya as the “King Of Smugglers” and was the man if you wanted to move anything, from fuel, to people to drugs as the Commander of Coast Guard in Az-Zawiyah near Tripoli which made him responsible for tackling the boats carrying waves of immigrants to Europe.
