ALITO SAYS HE'S SURE CONGRESS WANTED TO BAN A RAPID-FIRE GUN DEVICE, BUT OVERTURNS THE RULE ANYWAY

He argued it had been too broad in interpreting firearms law and that Congress never explicitly meant to ban bump stocks, challenging the law on statutory grounds, not Second Amendment protections. In its decision Friday, the court's conservative justices agreed.Writing for the majority opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas said that the bump stock couldn't be considered a machine gun because it doesn't fire more than one bullet per trigger pull — it accelerates how many times the trigger is pulled."A bump stock does not convert a semi-automatic rifle into a machinegun any more than a shooter with a lightning-fast trigger finger does," Thomas wrote.Alito, in his concurrent opinion, said the "horrible shooting spree" in Las Vegas proved that a bump stock could cause the same kind of killing as a machine gun.But Alito said Congress needs to be explicit that it wants to ban bump stocks, too, by amending the law or passing a new one."Now that the situation is clear, Congress can act," Alito said.In a dissenting opinion joined by the other liberal members of the court, Justice Sonia Sotomayor trashed the decision as "artificially narrow" and warned it'll have "deadly consequences.""When I see a bird that walks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, I call that bird a duck," she wrote.

NORTH KOREA'S KIM JONG UN COULD GET HIS HANDS ON SOME WORRYING MILITARY TECH IN EXCHANGE FOR THROWING RUSSIA A WAR LIFELINE

Much of the country's stockpiles date back decades, and US and South Korean officials have raised doubts about the effectiveness of these weapons. If Russia were to collaborate with North Korea on ammo production, or at the very least give it better capabilities, then North Korea could find itself with larger, more effective stockpiles for a potential conflict on the peninsula. But how this plays out is not all about what North Korea wants.

There's also the question of what Putin is willing to provide.

Further support could depend on how the war in Ukraine goes or whether South Korea decides to directly provide lethal aid to Ukraine, as opposed to its current policy of sending it via the US.During CSIS' The Impossible State panel discussion on Monday, Scott Snyder, the president and chief executive officer of the Korea Economic Institute of America, said that the dynamic between Moscow and Seoul could determine what Putin decides to give North Korea. After South Korea threatened to provide lethal aid to Ukraine directly in light of last week's summit, Putin suggested the possibility of giving North Korea the military capabilities it wants.

'FAIT ACCOMPLI': INSIDE DEMOCRATIC LAWMAKERS' PARALYSIS OVER BIDEN

Some are insisting that Biden will "make the right decision" even though he says he's already made his decision.Rep.

Dean Phillips, the Minnesota congressman who gave up his seat to wage a quixotic primary challenge against Biden almost exclusively over the age issue, acknowledged that he may have been right, and that some of his colleagues had told him that.

Schumer calls on ABC's Rachel Scott, saying that he wants "to call on a woman first" since we're "talking about abortion." Scott asks if the Democratic leader is confident that Biden can win in November and serve for the next four years.

"As I've said before, I'm with Joe," he replies.

Schumer reiterates that phrase after two more questions about Biden, including one from CNN's Manu Raju about whether Schumer agrees with Murray's Monday evening statement that Biden "must seriously consider the best way to preserve his incredible legacy and secure it for the future." Murray had conveniently walked away less than 20 seconds earlier.

NORSE ATLANTIC UPDATES BUSINESS MODEL, REDUCES FLEET

Yet somehow it’s an idea that is tried over and over and over again. As the airline continues to rack up losses, executives are seemingly starting to realize that the path to profitability with this business model just isn’t there.

Not only that, but the airline is planning fundamental changes to its business model, which seem sensible, frankly.Norse Atlantic reports strong demand, low yieldsHow Norse Atlantic plans to transform business modelNorse Atlantic’s challenges should surprise no oneBottom lineNorse Atlantic reports strong demand, low yieldsLet’s take a look specifically at Norse Atlantic’s Q2 2024 financial results, since the second quarter is historically strong across the Atlantic, so this is when Norse Atlantic should be doing best.

So, how did Norse Atlantic do?Revenue increased by 65%, to $164.8 millionThe number of passengers carried increased by 99%, to 406,306The load factor increased from 75% to 82%Unit costs ex fuel were down 35%Revenue per passenger decreased from $425 to $380The airline reported a loss of $31.7 million for the quarter.

That’s slightly better than in the previous year, but still awful, frankly, when you consider revenue was “only” $164.8 million.

NEW BUSINESS OWNERS COULD GET A $50,000 TAX DEDUCTION UNDER KAMALA HARRIS'S PLAN

Harris aims to hack away at some of the red tape and startup costs new businesses face when they're setting up shop.According to a Harris campaign official, Harris wants to bolster the tax deduction that small businesses can claim for initial startup costs.

Some small business owners have to turn to creative funding measures to get their businesses off the ground, which can come with their own risks.Harris's proposal would increase that startup deduction tenfold, upping it from $5,000 to $50,000; businesses would also be able to defer claiming it until they turn a profit — which is when they'd also likely encounter a larger tax burden. The other aspect of Harris's plan hinges on easing the logistical burden on new entrepreneurs.

It's no secret that many small businesses must wade through administrative red tape to finally get to their opening days.Harris's proposals include incentives for local governments to reduce their own red tape, creating a standard deduction for small businesses to ease the time spent on taxes, and chipping away at barriers in obtaining occupational licenses that can inhibit businesses or workers from crossing state lines.Harris also wants to pour cash into small businesses: She wants to guarantee that a third of federal contract dollars will go to smaller businesses and set up a fund to help community banks cover the cost of interest for small businesses.Harris previously called for a restoration of the expanded child tax credit — bringing it back up to $3,600 — and giving middle and lower-income parents a $6,000 credit in their child's first year of life. How far a hypothetical future President Harris could get with major economic proposals will depend on the makeup of Congress.

SOUTHWEST’S OPTIMISTIC PLAN TO REDUCE TURN TIMES, SPEED UP BOARDING

Specifically, the goal is to shave five minutes off of each aircraft turn, and if implemented correctly, the airline argues that this would free up the equivalent of 16 aircraft.Southwest’s presentation on reducing turn timesThe challenge is that Southwest already has the best turn time in the industry, so can the airline go from best to even better?

Specifically, the airline wants to reduce turn times by five minutes, and claims that will free up the equivalent of 16 aircraft. Is this brilliant, or is Southwest grasping at straws here, and even a bit unrealistic?

Cranky Flier covered this a few days ago, and I find it to be fascinating…How Southwest plans to improve operational efficiencyMy take on Southwest’s efficiency initiativeBottom lineHow Southwest plans to improve operational efficiencySouthwest prides itself in operational efficiency.

Back in the day, the airline was known for its 25-minute turns, thanks to its open seating policy, no checked bag fees, and relatively small planes. However, those days are long gone, and currently Southwest’s average turn times are roughly twice as long.

THE CRYPTO INDUSTRY HAS SPENT MILLIONS THIS ELECTION. HERE'S WHAT IT HOPES TO GET IN RETURN.

A pro-Trump political action committee has raised at least $7.5 million in crypto donations since June, and as Trump's betting market odds climb ahead of the election, there's been a corresponding surge in bitcoin's value.Trump visited the Bitcoin 2024 crypto conference in Nashville in July, where he pledged to fire SEC Commissioner Gary Gensler and keep all of the federal government's bitcoin in a "strategic national bitcoin stockpile" if elected. The audience gave Trump a standing ovation at the mention of firing Gensler, Richardson said, "because the industry wants that clear regulatory guidance from the SEC.""I personally have supported Trump, and I would have been happy to extend that same support to Harris if she had come out with a bold stance in supporting the industry in the same way that Trump did, but she has not done that," Richardson said.Harris has been less vocal about her position on crypto, but she has started to show quiet support for the industry on the campaign trail in recent months.

"So Stand With Crypto will educate people on these candidates.""We want to help with that education, and so the $1.3 million is targeted to helping in these swing states," Richardson added. For Richardson, the "turning point" in his decision to get involved in politics came on May 9 when his company planned to uplist on the New York Stock Exchange.

ISRAIR WANTS TO FLY FROM TEL AVIV TO NEW YORK, END EL AL MONOPOLY

The challenge is that Israir doesn’t have planes capable of operating the service, so the airline would need to lease aircraft in order to make this work.

Israel’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has reportedly initiated talks with US regulators, to enable this kind of service to happen. The challenge is that Israir can’t actually operate these flights with its own aircraft, given that it only has a fleet of eight Airbus A320s, which aren’t capable of operating such a long route.

Instead, Israir wants to wet lease two wide body aircraft in order to facilitate this service.

With a wet lease agreement, Israir would be selling and marketing the flights, while the aircraft and crew would be provided by another operator. Here’s what Israeli Transportation Minister Miri Regev had to say about this plan:“I thank the CAA for their thorough work that enables significant relief in the flight crisis created due to the war.

QATAR AIRWAYS PLANS DOHA TO BOGOTA FLIGHTS (WITH CARACAS STOP)

Qatar Airways intends to launch an interesting new ultra long haul flight.Qatar Airways wants to fly to Bogota, ColombiaHow this fits into Qatar Airways’ networkBottom lineQatar Airways wants to fly to Bogota, ColombiaQatar Airways has requested permission with regulators in Colombia to launch a new route to the country.

The Caracas stop would only add five miles to the direct air distance.Qatar Airways wants to start flying to BogotaFor context on the length of that flight, Qatar Airways’ flights to California and Texas all cover somewhere around 8,000 to 8,300 miles, so this flight would be a comparable length.

Meanwhile Qatar Airways’ longest route is to New Zealand, and that flight covers just over 9,000 miles. How this fits into Qatar Airways’ networkCurrently Qatar Airways’ only destination in South America is Sao Paulo, Brazil (GRU), which is served twice daily.

Before the pandemic, Qatar Airways also had a tag flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina (EZE), but that’s no longer operated. This would be Qatar Airways’ second route to South AmericaI’m not super familiar with the economics of ultra long haul service to Northern South America.

SAM ALTMAN SCOFFS AT ELON MUSK'S CLAIMS OF AN OPENAI ANTITRUST 'CONSPIRACY' IN NEW LAWSUIT FILING

8 REASONS COUPLES SHOULD TAKE THEIR HONEYMOON BEFORE GETTING MARRIED

This shift can reveal how you and your partner cope with stress, fatigue, and the unexpected.

Does one of you take charge while the other shuts down?

Observing how your partner treats othersAnother insightful aspect of travel is observing how your partner treats other people.

Traveling together can give you a clear picture of how your partner handles money.

For instance, if one person wants to pack every moment with activities while the other prefers leisurely days, can you find a middle ground?

This balance is crucial in a long-term partnership.

I do think couples should compromise and do what each other wants on alternate days.

"Reacher" season three sees Jack Reacher go undercover in a criminal organization.Author Lee Child told Business Insider he wants to adapt the "Reacher" book about the opioid crisis.Alan Ritchson told BI he would be open to telling a "more modern story.""Reacher" fans have come to expect fast-paced storylines and intense action from the Alan Ritchson-led show, but the ratio of punches to emotional drama is not exactly balanced. So viewers may be surprised that Lee Child, the author of the "Jack Reacher" books, told Business Insider that he wants the show to tackle the opioid crisis. Before "Reacher" season three premiered Thursday on Prime Video, BI asked Child which of his books he would like to see adapted next.Child said: "The book that I am proudest of is 'The Midnight Line,' which is about the opioid crisis, written from a very sympathetic point of view, from the addict's point of view.

I was very happy with that as a book.

And I do not know how that would play on TV, but that would be one that I'd be interested to see."This may mean viewers will get to see another side to Reacher.

HUFFPOST'S NEW EDITOR ON TRUMP, THE PENTAGON, AND BEING OWNED BY BUZZFEED

I think that is in parallel with what's happening in the country. The thing is, I still think there are people that are in that other place.

We have credentialed Pentagon reporters, and we cover the Pentagon, but we didn't ask to have that space.

But we're happy to be there if that's what's asked of us.Given that you didn't ask for it, and that you don't have a full-time Pentagon correspondent, did you consider handing the space back to an outlet that does do that coverage? Our assumption is that if we did that, then they would just take it away. You've worked at HuffPost for a long time, under several different owners: It was independent, then it was owned by AOL, then by Verizon, now by BuzzFeed.

I don't want to ask you to comment on different owners …I am kind of happy to cover the different owners.

I think that different eras have had their own strengths and weaknesses.I really like being owned by BuzzFeed.
