How Kherson museums were looted. A film worth watching
Preamble. I am one of the few people who have written about the looting of museums in eastern Ukraine since 2014. But at the time, it seemed to be happening somewhere far away, in Australia, although in Moscow the antiques market was literally teeming with antiquities from eastern Ukraine
However... we have what we have. As for me, there is nothing new in the fact that Russians steal from museums. They have always done it and will always do it: they will sell something, and someone will be declared a "great Russian artist", although the artist had a relationship to Russia as a beaver has to a cloven-hoofed animal. Russians don't give a shit about logic - they just quietly shit and go, as they say, "I found it". And that's it.
Now about the film itself. This is a documentary. It's an interesting and boring work done to find those involved in the theft of museums in the Kherson region.
At the end of the fifth minute of the film, you are shocked to see the empty ancient safes from which the Russians stupidly stole everything and left nothing behind. Although... not shocking is the wrong expression. It would be more accurate to say that this is a reminder that the war is not in Guadeloupe, but much closer. And that the Russians will do exactly the same thing in your town or village if they have the opportunity
The only thing I personally didn't like was the way we covered a person who passed on information about how the Russians were looting the Kherson Art Museum. In my opinion, it was too early to do this - there are still enough collaborators in Kherson, which means that it is a risk to a person's life.
On the other hand, the person who informed the public about the theft is an adult and has her own head on her shoulders - who am I to criticise her choice to show her face? I have to respect this decision, even though I really don't like it
The seventh minute is trash and comedy: the FSB officers went to the museum worker's house to search it, because they thought she was hiding museum documents there...
The film also shows what always happens during the occupation: employees changing their shoes on the flight and appointing outright morons to senior positions because they support Russia.
The Kherson Museum of Local Lore - the former director went into cooperation with the Katsaps. After that, some people with a pro-Ukrainian position left the city. The museum is turning into one of the centres of Russian propaganda - Russian military are hosted on its territory and various Goebbels-style videos are filmed
This was not in Alaska. It's just a 10-12 hour drive from Kyiv, not as far as it seems at first glance
By the way, a request to the authors of the film - at the 11th minute you show and write that it is a player Katyonak, although it is actually a player named Steshin. If possible, please correct it, because it's too jarring.
The room with the antique weapons is completely looted. The empty shelves resemble images from the late Soviet era, when there was virtually nothing in the shops. Or that locusts entered the museum and devoured everything they could get their hands on
Scythian gold, Sarmatian gold, Hun gold were also stolen by the Russians. All that remains are the places where it used to be in the museum. And the lighting. Nothing else. The Katsaps took more than 23,000 exhibits from the Kherson Museum of Local Lore in a week
Well, stealing icons from a museum located on the territory of a foreign state is not really something to comment on. Although... perhaps the Russian god approves of this - I would not be surprised if it concerns Russians and their behaviour on foreign soil.
In total, more than 10,000 items were stolen from the Kherson Art Museum. Personally, it reminds me of how the Nazis once plundered Europe. It's stupidly similar.

The film goes on to tell the story of those who directly helped the Russians rob museums. One of them was Artem Lagoysky, a former local blogger with the pseudonym 'bull'. It's hard to know whether to laugh or cry, but the same character was appointed by the Russians as the "Deputy Minister of Culture". The surrealism and grotesqueness of the situation is off the charts: cattle are in charge of both culture and fucking theft. Only the Russians could have invented this.
By the way, the cattle turned out to be very stupid - they admitted that they personally took (helped to steal) exhibits from the Kherson museum (Art, get out of town!)))). Moreover, the cattle also turned in their accomplices because of their vanity and desire to appear to be what they are not and will never be - a respected member of society
The cattle, because of their own stupidity, also turned in those involved in the robberies - the so-called heads of the Crimean defence museums of Sevastopol and Chersonese, who are ethnic Russians and who moved to Crimea only after the occupation of the peninsula by Russia.
The so-called "minister of culture" of the Kherson region, a local collaborator, also turned out to be mentally retarded - he also confirmed the direct involvement of Russians in the theft of museums in the Kherson region
Speaking of hypocrisy. The Russians claim that they did not loot museums in the Kherson region - they were "saving" exhibits from the war and publicly declare this. The scale of the "rescue" is impressive - from only 6 museums in Ukraine, the Russians stole as many exhibits as are in the Louvre. And these are just minimum estimates
Another thing that does not favour the Russians who allegedly "saved" the museum exhibits is that the Russians also stole museum documents and destroyed some of the museum documents. Therefore, this is the theft of cultural heritage, not the "preservation of exhibits," as the Russians claim.
At the end of the film, it is emphasised that the robbery of Ukraine by Russia did not begin during the invasion. The Russians have been doing this for the last 400 years, because they believe that by destroying culture, they will destroy the Ukrainian identity and, consequently, the nation as such. The first Ukrainian constitution by Pylyp Orlyk is kept in the Russian state archive. The mosaics and frescoes of St Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral were taken to Moscow.
Hanna Skrypka, one of the main characters in the documentary, decides to leave Kherson because not everyone in the city still understands that it is possible to visually work for the Russians while actually working in the interests of Ukraine. It's a rather uncomfortable topic, but we will encounter this kind of thing a lot, when someone who hugged Russians in photos and videos has actually done so much for Ukraine that it's time to make a film about each of these people, if not a spy series, then a film.
The moral is simple. The war is closer than it seems. Russians will do the same thing everywhere as they did in Kherson - loot museums like the Nazis did in their time, and then say it wasn't them
And one more thing - please like the video on YouTube (there is also a version in English), because the work done is really cool https://youtu.be/5Nm4TIbYkdM?si=ZFnoeavdD8ukZhm9

«Я особисто виносив експонати». Учасники пограбування херсонських музеїв зізналися в злочині
Восени 2022 року росіяни пограбували два музеї Херсона — художній та краєзнавчий. Тікаючи від українського контрнаступу російська армія незаконно вивезла понад 20 тисяч предметів мистецтва та історичних артефактів, які належать Україні, зокрема, й золото…
