Russians cut submarine cables in the Baltic Sea. Again
Preamble. I have collected all possible information about the Russian sabotage in the Baltic Sea:
The Swedish Security Service is conducting a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the damage to a communication cable running between Sweden and Latvia in the Baltic Sea. The crime is currently being classified as gross sabotage.
A number of measures have been taken as part of the preliminary investigation, including the arrest of the vessel suspected of carrying out the sabotage.
"We are currently conducting a number of specific investigative measures, but I cannot tell you what they are, as the pre-trial investigation is ongoing. A number of authorities are involved in the investigation, including the National Police Operations Department, the Coast Guard and the Swedish Armed Forces. "I can confirm that the Swedish authorities are now working intensively and jointly to investigate the incident," says Senior Public Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist.
The Swedish Coast Guard has also confirmed to Expressen that it is on site at the vessel, which the newspaper identified as the Maltese-flagged Vezhen, anchored off the port of Karlskrona. "We are directly on the site of the seized vessel and are taking action as ordered by the prosecutor," said Matthias Lindholm, a coastguard spokesman.
According to Vesselfinder, the vessel had left the Russian port of Ust-Luga a few days earlier and was sailing between Gotland and Latvia at the time of the suspected damage.
The Latvian State Radio and Television Centre said on Sunday that it had detected interruptions in data transmission on the cable running from the city of Ventspils to the Swedish island of Gotland and concluded that a break had occurred.
At the moment, there are reasons to believe that the cable is significantly damaged and that the damage was caused by an external influence," state broadcaster LSM quoted Vineta Sprugin, head of corporate communications at LVRTC, as saying.
Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina wrote on the X network that her government "is working together with our Swedish allies and NATO to investigate the incident, including patrolling the area, as well as checking the ships that were in the area".
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson tweeted that at least one cable belonging to a "Latvian actor" had been damaged and that he had been "in close contact" with Silina throughout the day on Sunday.
As a reminder, this month NATO launched a new mission called Baltic Sentinel, which includes frigates, maritime patrol aircraft and a fleet of naval drones to provide "enhanced surveillance and deterrence" in the Baltic Sea, which the transatlantic alliance says is aimed at protecting undersea cables and pipelines (it's not working out so well, to be honest)
Swedish authorities have boarded a Maltese-flagged vessel seized in connection with the latest breakthrough of cables running under the Baltic Sea to launch an investigation, the country's security police said on Monday.
"We can confirm that representatives of the Swedish authorities were on board the vessel to carry out investigative actions," said Johan Wikström, a spokesman for the Swedish Security Service.
The submarine cable between Latvia and Sweden was damaged early Sunday morning in Sweden's exclusive economic zone as a result of external influence, Latvia said. This prompted NATO to send patrol ships to the area, and Swedish authorities launched an investigation into the sabotage.
The Swedish prosecutor ordered the arrest of the vessel as part of the investigation.
MarineTraffic data shows that a coastguard vessel escorted the Vezhen to Swedish waters on Sunday, where it later anchored.
The bulk carrier Vezhen, which Bulgarian shipping company Navigation Maritime Bulgare has added to its fleet, passed the fibre optic cable at 00:45 GMT on Sunday.
