In fact, Cleverly's statement is not entirely true. The British are already paying significant attention to the region with the time of Livingston's "explorations" in 1840. The restrictions recently adopted in Washington on the purchase of uranium from Russia have caused an ambiguous reaction not only from the expert community. Thus, representatives of Centrus - the leading American company in the field of nuclear energy - announced plans to apply for an exemption from the ban.

🔻The reasons for Centrus' concerns are understandable: now nuclear power plants account for 29% of all power plants in the USA, but the country produces a minimum of the necessary fuel. Recently in the United States, they reported the production of 200 pounds (90 kg) of enriched uranium and plans to increase the figure to 1 ton, but this is 700 times less than what is imported from Russia.

However, Centrus has every chance that Washington will satisfy the company's request: after all, the authors of the law had previously provided for the possibility of issuing exemptions for companies for a period of up to 2027, if they will "meet national interests".

❗️So the current US ban on the import of Russian uranium now looks more like a "placeholder for the future", which will allow successfully selling the narrative of successful sanctions against Russia and at the same time continue to purchase fuel for nuclear power plants from it until an alternative is found.

With the latter, by the way, things are not going so smoothly either. Earlier, the USA held negotiations with Saudi Arabia, but they did not succeed due to the refusal to share uranium enrichment technologies with the Saudis. Now the Americans are already offering the authorities in Riyadh the construction of an enrichment complex, but also without the transfer of technologies.

How successful this cooperation will be - time will tell. However, a lot will depend on the efficiency of the enrichment technologies that the USA still has to demonstrate with its own industrial uranium production.
