Epoch 471
10/3/2024
Contact - info@genepool.one

Expected number of blocks (based on delegation/stake): 4.92

Blocks Allocated : 3

Blocks Produced : 3

Blocks on Chain: 3

Luck* : 61%

Blocks Predicted for the Next Epoch: 7

So this epoch we produced all the available blocks (three) and for the next epoch we have an estimated allocation of seven blocks which for the first time in a long while is above expectations 🎉

We have rotated the KES keys which needs to be done every approx ninety days and so we will keep an eye on the next block to be produced to confirm the keys are fine.

That’s the super small update since yesterday and we will be back at the end of the epoch with an update.

*– Blocks are allocated randomly each epoch based upon total stake a pool has just like a lottery. Luck refers to how many blocks were allocated to a pool against the expected blocks that the pools should produce. Some epochs (5 day periods) you will be allocated more blocks and some less but over time it should even out.

Blocks Predicted for the Next Epoch: 5

A nice epoch at last for the pool with seven blocks allocated and seven produced and for the next epoch we have an estimated five blocks.

No problems with the KES key rotation new blocks were produced with no issue, other than this the pool ran well and we are happy with the performance. There is a new node 8.9.0 and we will be looking to upgrade to this in the next three epochs.

Not a lot else to report - Charles came out with a new video on scalability so perhaps that may be of interest. If you have an hour to spare you can see it here.

The latest weekly development report can been seen here.

That’s it for now keep staking and we appreciate all of you who continue to stick with us - many thanks!

Blocks Predicted for the Next Epoch: 5

Another smooth epoch with five blocks produced and five estimated for the coming epoch.

The pool is running fine although we have a few items on backlog such as the node upgrade and we will look into becoming a mithril signer as well which should be something fairly trivial to setup (we shall see).

Nothing else to report for now so we will return with a short update in five days.

Blocks Predicted for the Next Epoch: 2

A good epoch with all five blocks that were allocated produced. The next epoch is not looking so good with an estimated two blocks to be allocated.

Again no issue with the pool it is running well. We still have our backlog to look at and there is a new 8.9.1 release so we will wait and watch the uptake of this for a few weeks before installing as is our normal policy.

Nothing else to report for now so we will return with a short update in five days.

Another epoch down and two blocks made which is all we were allocated but for the next epoch we have an estimated eight blocks allocated which will make up for this lean epoch.

Again no issue with the pool it is running well.

Nothing else to report for now so we will return with a short update in five days.

Blocks Predicted for the Next Epoch: 3

A nice epoch with eight blocks allocated and all eight produced. For the next epoch we have a below average allocation of three blocks.

The pool ran well during the epoch with no maintenance and we are happy with the performance. Still the upgrade to come but as we have some travel arrangements coming up it will be at least three epochs until this happens.

Another epoch goes by and we made all three blocks allocated to the pool. For the next epoch we have an estimated six blocks allocated.

Again this epoch the pool ran very smoothly with no issues.

We are away on some travels, so for the next two epochs the updates will be short and sweet. Until the end of the epoch have a great five days.

Just finishing up our travel so back to base soon. Halving/Halvening day is here for the Bitcoin network and let’s see where this takes us. Hopefully another year of bull market.

A decent epoch with five blocks produced but the bad news is for the next epoch it is estimated we will be given only one block. This is just how the protocol works and you win some and lose some but should work out even at the end of the day over a long period of time.

This epoch the pool ran as expected and there were no problems.

We are back at base and we will look into some of the backlog we have over the next few weeks. Nothing serious, updates to the OS and the cardano node are needed again as the latest release is 8.9.2.

A pretty interesting video from Charles dropped a few days ago which can be seen here.

Nice that epoch is behind us with only a single block allocated which was produced to the chain and for better news we have seven blocks allocated for the next epoch.

It was a quiet epoch for the pool with it running well.

We have been working a bit on our infrastructure this past epoch and we have made some progress but more to go. There always seems to be one job crossed off our list and two added but that is life. We will look into introducing a third relay on one of our servers and try this with docker to see how it looks.

A good epoch for all with seven blocks allocated and produced on chain. We also have another above expectation allocation for the next epoch of seven blocks again.

Pool ran well no drama.

We still have a to-do list here and as we reorganise some of our infrastructure these are on hold for a while longer.

Another epoch down and we produced the two blocks allocated. We have a decent seven blocks estimated for the forthcoming epoch.

The pool ran well with one issue as a relay went down because of an issue with the server provider but that is why you should have at least one backup relay in a different location. Other relay was fine and pool carried on running until the issue was resolved. Nothing else to report.

So until the end of the next epoch have a great five days and we will return with a short update.

Apologies for being late with this update. All three blocks were produced and for the next epoch we have an estimated five blocks.

We are coming to the end of another epoch and we produced the two blocks we were allocated. We seem to be in a bad luck streak at the moment as for the next epoch we again estimate two blocks will be allocated to the pool. It is frustrating but that is the way the protocol works(*).

The KES keys were rotated successfully and the new blocks made and we have been pretty busy upgrading both the hardware and the software this epoch. We have upgraded a couple of machines to 8 core 32GB RAM as this is now needed (24 GB+) with peer to peer (P2P) activated. We have upgraded all of our nodes to the latest Cardano node version 8.9.3 and all nodes are now running P2P - the block producer has it enabled to use the latest network stack but also there is a parameter to stop it connecting using P2P so it only connects to our relays (useLedgerAfterSlot = -1) so it's IP address remains hidden.

This required some work to understand the config and topology files and we have also enabled true P2P discovery on the relays and bootstrapping. This has also meant an upgrade to grafana for monitoring and changes to our monitoring script as some values we relied on have changed. So we are close to be ready for the upcoming hard fork with the next Cardano node 9.0 release and when the new node is released and we upgrade this signals this to IOG who will proceed with the Chang hardfork only when a certain percentage of the SPO's are upgraded. We are still tweaking things but all looks good with the new setup.

The latest Community Digest is available for those interested in the latest news in the Cardano ecosystem, and explains what is coming in node version 9.0.

Nothing else of note to report so until the end of the next epoch have a great five days and we will return with a short update.
